I just bought a Canon 70-200 2.8 IS (version I). I didn't expect to buy it. I was going to play it cool and look at my options but when I felt I just couldn't resist! Did I do the right thing, it was used so the price was very good and it seems to be in top condition. Or is the mark II that much better? :O

Anyone with experience? :)

This lens?

It's a horrible move, very bad buy... It's a garbage... I will PM my address, you send it to me, I'll throw it away for you, don't even bother using it once, you might hurt your eyes.

My favourite lens by far. You will not be disappointed.

Amazing Bokeh, colour, sharpness...

I've had the original version for several years, and while I do believe the mk II version is superior in some ways, I don't feel it's enough to upgrade. I think you will be very satisfied with the lens, it's a workhorse.

My most used lens, makes even my images look good. Take time to understand when to switch off the buttons on the lens. Get into the habit of checking the switches each time you start a shoot.

Gets you in everywhere as well.

From what I've heard, the new one is marginally sharper, and it's Image Stabiliser one stop better. Probably not worth the price difference.

Congratulations, I love this lens. Only I find it so heavy that I think long and hard before venturing out with it. But I am always pleased with the results when I do.

Well it seems like my impulse decision wasn't such a bad idea after all! :D

Incredible lens.. The Mk2 is supposed to be incredible as well, but as Kirbic said, not worth forking out the extra to upgrade.

A few of my challenge entries that I used it on..

I was shooting the explosive demolition of a building this morning. All the press guys set up with their 70-200 2.8s on their tripods. I kept wondering why since to my mind the shot was at 55mm. They fussed and fiddled and slowly most of them went to a shorter lens, but I realized they set up with the "Milkbottle" because they wanted that lens to work, because when they can use any lens, they try their favorite out first and hope it will do the job,

To be honest its heavy compared to a kit lens or similar, but not stupidly heavy - I could use one for a days nature trekking without too much trouble.

But then again - I am not a mortal man.

If you like the lens, but find it too heavy, send it to me and ill send you my Bigma. Walk around with that on your camera, or rather with your camera attached to the back of that, for one month, then we can swap back. You will find that the 70-200 2.8 will feel light as a feather.

I agree....it is such a light weight lens in comparison to what you could be using. I use it as one of my main wedding lenses. Often I am required to hold the 5D MkII body with the Sigma 50-500 lens in one position for up to 8 hours...a tripod is not a feasible option in those situations. So consider yourself lucky to have to trek with a 70-200!!!!

Have you been drinking Tuscan Whole Milk again? Or did you just recently purchase a new T-Shirt?

I'd pay to read Patrick_D_Harrington's comments on the opinions expressed in this thread about the lens in question, he has a most unique way of making a point.

Annnnnnnnd... back to our regularly scheduled programming: Love the lens. It's always on my camera when it comes out of the bag. Only if I need something wider does it come off. Congrats on the good impulse :)

First time I used mine, I entered it in a challenge. I literally clicked four shots... BLUE!!! And never have topped it since.

You will ADORE this lens.

I won a contest with one of my very first shots with this lens - a first time winner, too! I take this lens and the 24-70mmL with me whenever I go shooting. Have never had a single regret for purchasing it. Congrats on your purchase - I think you will be most pleasantly surprised with it!
