They sure are alone a lot, now.

They are big and occupy most of the center of the nest. Furthermore, the adults are unable to tuck them under, like they did when they were little newly hatched eaglets. These eaglets are now big enough to self regulate their own body heat. Considering how much fish and meat they consume, I'd guess they're warm enough (as long as they stay dry). Your point is well taken on vulnerability to predation, but I'm pretty sure the adults are roosting very close by, even though we don't see them on the branches very often. I know humans who have approached Northern Goshawk nests here in Colorado who have nearly lost their scalp from savage attacks by the adult protecting the young. I imagine adult eagles could do a lot of damage with their size and talons.

It's so funny to watch them stretch those huge feet and tiny wings out while rolling around on their bellies...Eagle Yoga!

Well, right now, I bet they wish they had even bigger wings with full feathers to keep themselves warmer. Brrrr...looks rainy and cold today for the little ones.

There are some fabulous pictures coming through right now* as the close up camera is working again.

Here's a repost of the link to the decorah Eagles

*Subject to change without notice, as the camera just went back to an overall view.

I love the amazing development I'm seeing. The three eaglets can now stand upright on their big feet. That's a step towards being able to eat by themselves, without being fed by the adults. It won't take long now for an adult to bring in a fish to the nest and the "little" ones will pounce. Just awesome! (I was worried a few days ago by the several days of snow, cold and rain.) Nature finds a way.

They look plump and perky today!

They're huge. Mom looks kinda silly trying to sit on them :-)

This is a dirty trick, because if you check this out, you'll never get any work done.
There is another eagle's nest in Hillsborough, New Jersey where the eaglets are a little younger and have a nicer climate. However, the breezes may give you a bit of seasickness.

One of the little ones has been snacking away on a piece of meat lying near him. I don't know how much he actually managed to break off, but he certainly put in the effort. One of the parents is there and didn't make any effort to help him.

Gina, don't feel too sorry for the little Eagles. They're being fed quite well. Mom is letting the young one figure out how to dissect it's meal. If you notice on all of the little ones, there is a bulbous pouch in the front at the base of their neck. That's called their 'crop' When it's bulging, they're not in need of eating anything for a while. They may still take food from the parents, but they have a good bit to process inside of them already. You will notice in the morning when they first wake up, this pouch looks a little wrinkley :)

scooter97 I wasn't feeling sorry for them. Just remarking on the fact that they were already being allowed to develop a little bit of independence. Amazing how quickly they grow up.

Sorry, my bad. I was thinking you were mad at the parent. I'll just go sit in the corner and zip it for a while :)

I was just looking at the 3 little ones alone in the nest and was interested to see how much darker the one now is than the other two. I can't believe how much they change from day to day.

I just looked too...they are almost ready for college! Amazing!

There is some major flapping of wings going on there. At least one of the little guys wants to fly already.

It's amazing how much they change in a few hours. And the behavior patterns are fun too. One minute they are all huddled together, practically breathing in unison. next, they are in their separate corners, refereed by responsible parent...

Also amusing is the fact that when they were 'babies' the viewer count was in the 100,000+ range; now they are adolescents, the viewer count seems to be in the 50-60,000 area.

this chance to view nature is such a blast!

I'm surprised at the drop in viewership. They're much more interesting now.

View's a little cloudy these days.

No, not because of the weather, but because of the accurate aim of the eaglets who are trained at an early age to (er) aim outside of the nest when pooping.

Actually, the sentiment of the moment is: "Rain Please" to clean the camera lens.

Still blurry pics are better than no pics.

The forecast is calling for showers and t-storms over the next 36 hours. So maybe by tomorrow or Tuesday the view will be clear again.

There must have been rain today. The view is now crystal clear!

It's wonderful how they are testing their wings, both extended span and flap speed. Very impressive birds. Seems to be a pecking order amongst the eaglets, but the parents keep the peace so all get to eat.

Well I haven't watched for about a week, and it was amazing how much they've changed since then. Also the site...I used to leave a window to them open on my second monitor. But after a while, an obnoxious advertisement with audio came on, which ended that for me. :(

I'll still check in from time to time, but no way I'm leaving a window up.
