I saw the little eaglet outside of the main area of the nest too. Then it looked like the parent eagle scooped the little one into the main are with the parents' beak. The little one kept poking its head out and I swear, the parent eagle looked up once with that perfect "kids!" expression....

You can go to the comments section on the main page. Want to talk about drama!! lol A blow by blow account of everything that happens in the nest.

I will say that I am a bit concerned about E2 as it has hardly fed at all. The older eaglet attacks it when food is being presented and I honestly have not seen E2 get a nice solid bit of food yet. Not that I have watched 24 hours straight, but I hope that the little one will survive. Time will tell as nature has it's way with things.

Look for egg number 3 to hatch tomorrow or Tuesday.

Sounds as though they're getting a well balanced and varied diet! :-)

Special thanks today to the woodchuck. Yikes! Another noble sacrifice of significance.

Got to thinking yesterday - what if that bird they had for dinner had babies of her own in a nest somewhere? Kinda like the female penguin who gets eaten before she can return to care for her chick. Nature sure can be a bitch sometimes!

PS was hopeful, but it won't come in at work.

Not uncommon for the "older" eaglet to kill it's younger sibling...even when food it plentiful. Happens a lot, and the parents WILL NOT intervene. It's just in their nature. On a brighter note, that same situation happened a couple of years ago with these same eagles and just when it looked like the younger male might not survive the mother started feeding it more and all was well. In fact he was the first fledgeling to fly and leave the nest. :)

Is that what's on the side of the nest? A woodchuck?

they're feeding!!

So it looks like a woodchuck and a crow, (or raven?)

regarding feeling bad about the dead bird that possibly has eggs of her own. One thing to remember is that eagles will hunt, but also go after carrion. That's why so many zoos have eagles -- it's amazing the number of eagles that get hit by cars.

Some friends saw the tail of the rodent. It's a muskrat.

two giant dead things. There's some sort of very large black bird there, too.

Yeah, that was there yesterday. You think they'd at least install a mini-bar fridge or something for these guys to keep their food in.

Personally I am a bit irritated with the nesting eagles. They are wasting food! They never finished off the rabbit before adding a couple of birds and now a muskrat. tsk tsk tsk

They like tripe, what can they say? Why have chicken feet when you can have tripe!

Do we know what happened to it? Did it get tossed over the edge? there's an eagle's nest down the peninsula here. If I go under the tree, will I find body parts?

Reminds me of the story by John McFee (Travels through Georgia) where
roadkill was on the menu and not only by wildlife.

ps - alas, the cam's gone to infrared.
:(

Take an umbrella. You never know what might get tossed while you're there. Or if they'll think you're edible...

That's what I said! Though I had crows feasting, not eagles...

oh wow! I finally found the comments section (it wasn't showing last time I looked).

Here's a youtube video of that incident with the baby eagle ending up on the side of the nest. I guess it grabbed onto dad, and ended up being flung. Mom got it back in later, but it was a long 4 minutes!! (even though I knew it turned out ok, it was still nerve racking to watch.)

The incident

There's a lovely tree at the Baylands Preserve with many Black Crown NIght Heron nests.
Many are occupied. I had not planned to process this image (well, really, look at the view)
but when the discussion about the eagle tree came up, well, I could not resist.
