The Edward Weston challenge is now running under Advanced Editing, due to the fact that (as Bear_Music put it), "the man burned in the edges of everything he printed, practically".

Thanks!

What does this mean... to burn in the edges of his prints??

Good call ;)

Thanks!

And now hopefully you will change this for Disassembled objects as well, so that we can see some creative floating assemblies and not just stack of parts on tables!

You see a lot of his images have the edges darkened to contain the tonalities of the images. Many of his most iconic vegetable images could not be adequately duplicated without some local control in the darkroom. He used only the most primitive lighting setups, when he used artificial light at all: mostly he photographed in daylight and diffused daylight, so he did his light control in the darkroom.

I admit I exaggerated somewhat when I said "of everything he printed, practically" but I dashed off the note to Langdon within minutes of the challenge announcement, in a fit of high dudgeon. Thanks, Langdon!

Please do the same for the Disassembled Objects challenge!!!!!

Good choice. Truthfully, it'd be hard to "replicate" work of anyone considered a "master" under Basic rules. Masters have always used every tool in their arsenal to create the final print.

Please make the Disaassembled Objects challenge a MINIMAL EDITING challenge.
Just expressing a different point of view.

YES! Love his work, can't wait to see the stuff that comes out of this!
03/23/2011 12:10:42 PM · #15
Ha! I just underexposed my images to compensate for basic. Great change, thank you!

and can you also add a reason for your view? Or is it just to bother those that wish for advanced?

Sure. Sometimes it's fun to see what everyone comes up with creatively when they can't use their editing skills.
graphicfunk was one (among many) of the good ones. I couldn't wait to read his comments after the challenge to see just how the heck he accomplished his capture. Like I said, just expressing another viewpoint.

yes, but he was able to make many of his entries look like expert editing before that was around.

I am glad the Edward Weston Challenge is now an advanced editing.

However, minimal editing would be a challenge for me too, and they are really rare (so far 4 open challenge and 5 member only). I don't recall entering a photo that was not even cropped!

You are right. graphicfunk never participated in a Minimal Editing challenge.
Back then the basic was very basic. :) ;)
I get the impression that it's not ok to have a different opinion.
I think all the challenge editig rules are interesting and provide something for everyone.

Oh, come on! You have been here well long enough to know better...

It is just fine to have a different opinion.

It is the expressing of that opinion that will get you in trouble.... ;-)

Edited to correct spelling. Not only do I not have an opinion, I can't seem to spell it as well...

I support your different opinion on account of its being different.

My typing gear kicked in when it shouldn't have. I clearly am not thinking coherently. I'd better go have a piece of fruit. Is it ok to have an apple? Or should I have an orange? Maybe...I'll just have a mixed fruit salad. ;)

You are already under suspicion of being a mixed fruit salad.
