I love new gadgets and I really want the new iPad 2 that comes out this Friday. Now with that comes some curiosity though. In the photographic community out there, what do you use your iPad for? And would you prefer that or an iPhone, or both, and why? And how do you use your iPad vs a Laptop while traveling? I'd love to see what others are doing out there.

Thanks,

I just bought an original iPad used, the market is flooded with them right now for people upgrading. I bought it to use homeschooling apps for my son. He has Muscular Dystrophy and it is getting harder for him to hold a pencil and write. With all the apps we can do everything on the touch pad much easier.

I also have a couple of iPod Touches(smaller versions) and I load some sample photos on them when I go do location shoots to remind me of places and poses I've used in the past and to show clients what they might expect. I can only assume the iPad could be just a larger version for this.

I'm typing this on an iPad. We are a 3-iPad family, not as indulgent as it sounds. I bought one as they came out, I got one via work and my wife got one as part of a conference attendance.

The are the most used bits of kit in our household. I'd give up my iPhone before my iPad.

I multitask in front of the TV, I augment TV, use it to look up more info on the things we are watching. We play head-to-head Scrabble on it.

I do most of my emailing with it (outside of work).

I use Popplet for note taking in all the meetings I attend - less linear and makes more sense later.

We use a lot of social media to disseminate project findings so I regularly use Tweetdeck and YouTube app.

I use Omnitask for task management.

I use the book store and iBooks as my default reading device. If I buy a gadget, I go online and download a .PDF of the manual (I never lose it).

I review my DPC scores, I vote on DPC challenges, I comment on DPC images.

I buy films / TV programmes and stream them to the TV via Apple TV.

We use it in the kitchen for recipes.

We use it in the kitchen for music, both via the iPod App and streaming Internet radio.

I've used it with Keynote to do presentations to small groups.

I keep a portfolio of images in the Photos App.

Lots of other game stuff at silly-low prices.

Enough??

I'm a fan!

Cheers

Paul

I use my iPad strictly for web browsing and e-mail. It's better than going to a computer when I only need to check a website, or when I want to read the news. I also have an iPhone 4, but when I'm at home, it's not always convenient to read with.

I use our iPad for games (I'm hooked on Boggle, Backgammon and Flight Control), surfing the web while watching tv (similar to Paul, to look up actors and movie info when I am watching a movie), to check e-mail, to read the news, etc. I have lots of photos on it, I use it to show family and friends pictures of my trips (especially my partner's parents who are elderly and don't have a computer). We've also got it set up as a remote so we can control our music (through iTunes) from anywhere in the house. My partner Joe does a lot more with it, he's the IT geek in the house.

Mostly for portfolio in my case. There is simply no better way to show photos. Also handy for quick online browsing and waiting room/travel entertainment.

Very handy on the go for travel and web browsing. No Flash, but that is more a matter of ego clash than capability. Biggest downside is no uploading capability, outside of special apps. So you cannot upload to places like DPC. Facebook and Flickr, yes. About anyplace else, no.

Still I use mine just about everyday after more than 8 months of ownership.

Does anyone use it to upload images out of the home?

I recently tried the camera connection kit - seems to work well for temp storage - does anyone use it for that? If so how do you get the images off the ipad?

Love mine!

It was an indulgent purchase late last year and not a day goes by that I don't use it, and use it and use it.

We live in a 3 level home and for me with my main computer downstairs I can surf the net on every level!

I love the games, watching movies.

What's the running cost of these things?

I want to use it as a portfolio as well. I held out for the iPad2, but as a portfolio, I don't see any reason not to buy a used iPad. Any thoughts?

Nothing if you have a WiFi only one. I do have one with a SIM but my 'contract' is a pay-as-you go for data affair. I can buy 24 hours of cellular access for £2 should I need it - which is about once every two months. Mainly I use wireless networks.

The original iPad serves that purpose admirably. The new one is considerably faster, slimmer and has cameras for video conferencing, but there's nothing from a portfolio standpoint that the first version can't do equally well.

Ben the iPad is fantastic at showing off your portfolio, I love my iPad. I hardly ever fire up the laptop any more.

It's what I'll be using mine for. When I get it...

I absolutely use it for uploads over wifi. With a couple of inexpensive apps and the camera connection kit I have an efficient workflow. Insert the SD card in the connection kit, load the images to Pictures. Then use Photogene (or other apps) to do some basic editing and Flickrstackr to upload to my Flickr account. Done.

Not quite the same as using PS, but excellent when time is short and you don't need anything more than basic editing, contrast, saturation etc. And yes, I shoot RAW. Displaying the portfolio is done with another app or with the basic Pictures application supplied with the iPad. The screen couldn't be better for flattering the shots - beautiful presentation.

Any early reports?

Thanks Shannon/Curt. The iPad 64GB at the Apple store is down to $529 (refurbished). Getting closer to taking the plunge...I just wonder if my iPhone will then be used as a phone rather than a shirt pocket computer. ;)

I just bought a 32GB for $400 with some extra's used with some transferable warranty on it. The 16GB versions are around $300 used. We got the one I bought yesterday and my son loves it.

Although I've been using Macs since 1992 (and watching others use them since 1988), I completely ignored the smart phone/iOS revolution (just wasn't interested; I mainly call my wife on my cell to say hello – no business). Otherwise I do all my production work on desktops/laptops.

My teenage daughter has had iPods and as of last Christmas an iPod Touch, and she got into it all immediately (she also loves tinkering in OS-X).

A colleague actually gave us a new first gen iPad several weeks ago (gets them in bulk for business purposes) and I suddenly felt like Rip Van Winkle (or Lazarus)! It's like discovering a computer for the first time. So my daughter's been teaching me how the iOS works, and now I'm pretty adept at it. It's a totally different approach (until OSX Lion comes out, that is...).

I use the iPad for mainly for convenient web surfing and reading PDFs, but I've also installed fun music apps (drums, guitars, etc.). My daughter has her games, of course. I'm now exploring what else is available in the bottomless pit of apps (for instance, another colleague showed me an app that displays the angle and direction of the sun at any given time over a Google Earth map, so it's great for photographers and videographers).

We expect to get the iPad 2 in a few weeks, and I'm looking forward to exploring the photography apps on it since it has a "camera".

Fantastic device, a true revolution.

I picked up an iPad 2 a couple of weeks ago with the primary goal of using it to show my portfolio and building a posing guide that I can use with client while shooting. I've found that I carry it everywhere now, like a notebook, and some of the social tools have made exploring photography a lot more fun.

There are a ton of great apps I use with both my iPad and iPhone.

Foliobook - great way to show your photos
Impressions - used for doing quick watermarks so you can email from device
The Photgraphers Ephemeris - tells you sun/moon rise and set based on location, time and date awesome for landscape
BirdsEye - lists where birds have last been seen in your area.. Can search by typemof bird (I.e. Eagle) or location. Community app
Get Paid- used for invoicing

You can also tether your iPad to your camera with some work and when you take shit with your camera it also displays it on the iPad. Still need to set this up myself but the video on it is awesome

If anyone knows any other useful apps like this photography related I would love to hear about them.

P.s. There are a lot of editing apps. I don't use them myself but I hear they are very good. Even photoshop has one!

Socom, I try to keep a regular eye on the App Store for the latest in categories of interest. I assume most if not all top developers will have a presence there, so chances are this is where you'll find what you need.

We are evaluating ebook readers for our library and wanted to include an ipad in the mix, but apparently we need to avoid the perception that we are spending taxpayer dollars on expensive toys. So, no ipads.

I have both an ebook reader (Nook), and an iPad. For strictly reading text in a well lighted area, I prefer the Nook. (Especially outside in sunlight.) The e-ink is easier on the eyes. For everything else, I use the iPad. Which means that the iPad is used daily, the Nook maybe once a week or so. If there are images or illustrations involved, the ebook reader rapidly falls far behind. 16 shades of grey was cool in 1981. Not so much for picture viewing now....

I use my iPad to play strategy games like Ingenious and Blokus.
