This post is aimed at members and users, not at the administration. In the recently completed Free Study, there were about 150 votes cast per entry. But, there were 320 entries! If you are going to submit an image, then vote on the work of your peers. I do not accept the argument claiming inability to vote fairly and objectively when one's image has been uploaded to the challenge. Celebrate the excellent photography of others by offering a vote commensurate with image quality. Offer constructive criticism and suggestions for improvement to those whose images fall short in some respects. But, don't stand idly by.... in receive mode only.

I don't disagree. But there have been a few weeks when I have been too busy to vote on challenges.
How would you moderate it? Need to vote on 10%? 20%? Averaged over last number of challenges?
Certainly an idea worth thinking about. I used not vote in the challenges because of the reasons you mentioned. I've started doing it recently again though.

While it may not be acceptable to you, I rarely vote in challenges where I am entered. While I believe that I probably could be fair, I find the urge to compare to my entry as better-worse, distracting.

As evidenced by my scores, and my voting (when I rank challenges by my votes) I do not share the same views as the majority of the site. (This is neither good nor bad, in my opinion.) However, it may cut down on the, "How can anybody give me a 3 on this entry?", threads.

So we have what equates to less than a 50% turnout on voting. I know there are people who won't vote in a challenge they are entered in, because they feel biased, but there can't be THAT many.

I agree. I had to spend a little extra time, that I didn't have, to finish up my voting on the free study last night. But I felt it was my responsibility to vote. I am not trying to persuade those of you who really feel strongly about not voting in a challenge you enter. Just the rest of you, if you have the time to enter a challenge, you have the time to vote. 15 min here and there throughout the week and its done.

By the way, if you really believe in not voting in a challenge you enter, then you should spend some time giving comments. I know Lydiatoo and others do this and I really appreciate it.

I vote my 20% on all challenges. In a big challenge such as FS I vote 20% in smaller ones I vote 100%. My internet connection is slow and I battle to get through them all but as long as my vote counts, I'm happy and I am happy for the votes I receive.

While I agree we all need to vote more, I also think commenting more on the voting that we do is also needed.

First, your 50% statement is only true if every voter votes on 100% of the images. That is not the case. Second, a recent string of threads on the site statistics show that after 100 votes or so, your score does not change all that much.

The only way to generate more votes in the free study challenge is to open up the voting population to registered users.

Important perspective. Possibly representative of many. Thanks! All I can say is.... I really began to enjoy this site when I became agnostic when voting. It has genuinely helped MY photography to try to understand the FULL range of image presentations. With only a very few exceptions, images are entered because the artist truly believed the uploaded image was a good effort and/or excellent interpretation of the challenge. So, when voting, I endeavor to discover, recognize and acknowledge the characteristics (sometimes very subtle) which the photographer loved so much to put the image into the public venue. Conversely, for images which are just like mine, I hold them to a higher standard...seeking room for improvement. At any rate, voting on all the images in a challenge improves my eye and widens my tolerance of styles not like mine.

I agree with most of the sentiments expressed in this thread. I agree that we would all like to see more votes and comments. But does anyone know of a place where you could get more feedback on your efforts than on this site? If so, then please share!
In the meantime: vote more and comment more...

I try my best to vote 100% in the challenges I vote in - and this includes ones I have submitted to. I hardly ever even think of my picture when in voting, it's kinda like I never even took a photo for the challenge. I'm really much to consumed looking at the work of others.

I used to try to comment 100% too. I rarely do that anymore, but I do comment alot.
I've seen in other threads that the reason people don't comment is because they either think they don't know enough about photography or about processing to offer anything useful to the artist OR they are afraid of being contacted by the artist and slammed for the comment they made.
But I think most people, regardless of their personal knowlege have something to offer the artist. Sometimes even the simplest comments can be found helpful or encouraging.

i have been making a habit of not only commenting on images i like but especially on image i dislike. I try to explain why i voted so low. I find it helps me not to make the same sort of mistakes in my own photos.

I always vote on 100% of entries, whether I am a participant or not. At current, my votes cast is ~4300 and my votes received is ~1500. As long as I am casting more votes than receiving, I feel like I am giving more than receiving.

Likewise, I strive to comment on at least 10% of entries in every challenge. If I have time, I will comment on more. But I find that 10% is my norm. As above, I have made 300 comments and received 75. Once again, I try to give more than receive.

That's my take on it all.

I think the important thing is to try to put more into this site than you receive. I have given out 850ish comments and received 250ish (I say 'ish' because I am on my smart phone and can't easily look it up.) I definitely think voting is important and should be done whenever time permits but I also understand that life sometimes gets in the way. I was only able to vote on 33% of the past FS. When I did finally have a moment to finish, my 8 week old baby started screaming. I guess the point is make the effort when you can and try to give more than you receive.

I've always wondered why registered members could only vote on the exclusive challenges. It would seem to me that our votes would be value added to the site. Since we're not paying, voting would help balance the scales. I commented on a few of the last free study. But I'll never comment on all entries in a challenge. Maybe the site owner is concerned about sock-puppet accounts being able to vote on all challenges.

I never thought about not voting in a challenge I enterred. I actually do the opposite and only vote on challenges that I do enter. I'm not comparing them to my entry but rate them on their own merits. Personally I find comments more helpful than the rating. It is useful to know why a person likes or doesn't like a photo that is how to learn and grow. Instead of voting more I would say comment more.

I have to date submitted 190,832 votes, but do have to admit that I missed voting when on holidays... I will try harder from now on. :O)

I used to vote on only the challenges I was in but now I vote only on those I'm not in.
I generally vote on 100% of the entries.
I do leave comments here and there but a new thing I am trying to do is leave a comment on an image from someone who commented on mine whilst on voting.

I have to admit the last month i have hardly voted, yet up to that point i voted 100% in every challenge. I think my change in attitude came as a result of the Best of 2010 where 423 entries and potential voters yielded 185 votes for my entry. I guess i got lazy and adopted the attitude of "If no one else is bothered why should I" This attitude is not going to help me develop but it can be really frustrating when the very people who want the votes dont return the favour.

I appreciate you will always have a slightly biased opinion when voting but in general a good shot gets a good vote i would imagine by 99%.

If you have the time to enter a shot you should have the time to vote also. (Kick self in rear and start voting again) ((That was a note to myself also))
