Looking for a photography club in the mid-michigan area preferably in or around Lansing. I tried google, but that's like going to Super Walmart and getting someone to help you with something...

Any members here in a local club? How is digital accepted into the 'photography' community?

Dude, why don't you go into like "Founder" mode and start up your own club??

//www.Photochrome.org is a lively club in San Francisco. Digital is accepted as long as you make your digital image into a slide. As more of our members get into digital, we are presently exploring how to make the club more digital friendly. Our bylaws and contest rules are on line in case anyone is interested. And if anyone is in the area, we meet the first 3 Thursdays of every month. Guests are always welcome.

Contact the Holland Color Camera Club in Holland, Michigan. They are a 35mm slide club that may be able to help you find what you are looking for. You may have to check at Lakewood Photo in Holland to get their phone number.

I know St. Johns has a camera club. I am still trying to find out when and where they meet. Check the Clinton County paper they usually have an article about them once every month or so.

Like Taterbug said, start your own but maybe do like what some of us in the LA area are doing and just ask other local DPC memebrs if they want to meet some weekend and go on a photo shoot. We haven't done one in a while since we're all busy at the moment but we'll start back up again soon. Take a look at my gallery (link is in my sig) and there are photos from our outings although not too many of the other people in the group since our main objective was to shoot photos of other things.

This is my photgraphy club right here.

Maybe DPC could have "chapters" or areas of interest that people could join and there could be officers for each area of interest, like a president or vice president etc. Sort of like with the nationalkbar association there are Products liability lawyers or commercial transaction lawyers or IP lawyers- sections. Or like internists or cardiologists or dermatoligists if you prefer a doctor example.

Has anyone ever suggested local chapters or areas of interest for DPC,

similar to the "category" feature in the galleries?

My local camera club is discouraging. It is, however, a very old club. It has been in business for just over 50 years. Two of the founding members are still regular attendees of the meetings. My group seems to 'shun' digital photography. Digital only photographers do not get the same chances to participate as the film photographers do. Our club meets twice per month and we have competitions at most meetings. This year, there are 6 print competitions and 13 slide competitions. The top 3 places in each competition are awared a certain number of points. At the end of the year, the photographer who has accumulated the most points gets the "Photographer of the Year" award. Without shooting film, I believe it's impossible to achieve that award.

The discussion of allowing digital photographers more of a chance to compete/participate keeps coming up but there is rarely any action on it. This is the first year we have had 6 print competitions. Prior to this year, it was just 4 per year.

We had a rather heated discussion on this issue Wednesday night.

If you join a camera club and shoot all/primarily digital, ask around and find out how limited your participation may be before you join.

Mr Setzler,
It is my wonder why you did not make a digital photographer club and not go to the other one at all. I think it is a good idea for you. You are very good with the digital.

I do not go with a photographer club, but i do like to go to the class many times and to the photo event trip too. it is very fun to go on a bus far away to take a pictures of a place I did not know of. with other photographers it is very fun to do for me.

if som are in the Los Angeles it is here to check out it.

It's because I don't care to draw a distinction between the two forms of photography. To me, it's all 'photography' whether it be film or digital.

Yes, i think it is a same too, but my camera it is a broken and I only can make the filem pictures now. So they are not allow on the DPC too. I like the digital more (I can see them fast) but the filem pictures it is so much a same as a digital (only more hard for me), it is my wonder why it is not allow.

Wish you would, faidoi! There's some pretty good art there.

And check out the Club too! Next meeting is September 3,Pictorial, (I'll be traveling and won't be there. But look up Jim Goldstein, he's the prime mover in digital and also is our webmaster), then Sept. 9 is Creative, Sept. 16 is Nature. Our photographers, especially in these categories, are outstanding.

Photochrome's been in business 62 years and has managed to evolve with the times with a minimum of fuss. (No, Jim, we don't have any founders left) Right now digital photographers have slides made and compete with film photogrpahers without any problems that I know of. slides.com in Wisconsin does a good and inexpensive job and there are local suppliers. We have print competitions once a month (2nd Thursday of the month) and the Board is investigating digital projection which will likely take a while but is definitely on the drawing boards. Logistics will take some working out.

If anyone is interested in starting a camera club, Photchrome.org has some downloadable Bylaws, and all the competition R & R a club might need to get started.

Alice

I agree with photography is photography, be it film or digital. However, film requires much more processing time / talent than digital.

Start a new club!!! I'm minutes away from Hickory and I'd be interested in joining simply for the benefit of learning and meeting new people.

To tell you the truth, that is how I found my photo club (Just typed in club or organization, and the city and state, into Google). Unfortunately we are closer to detroit (Port Huron, MI, actually), or I would have you come join mine. Even though many of the folks have done just film for years, most of the members embrace the change to digital, and many enjoy it just as much (It helps that the president of the club is pro digital!). I think that the film crowd respects the digital crowd, and visa versa, and each understands that each format is individual and unique in its own way; they both still have a place in the world. Hope you manage to find one, or start one. I like the comment about the DPC get-togethers; I went to the Chicago one, and it was great getting to see some of the people from this site! (Weren't you supposed to go to that one?)

Just my two cents worth! Good luck (and maybe we will have another midwest get-together, in MI this time!)

If I'd learn how to spell Photochrome, you'd probably have better luck with the link. Sorry you had problems. The downloadable information is in the JOINING section, about half way down the page.

When does your club meet? Do they mind guests? I wouldn't mind popping in if it's feasible...

did you ever end up finding a club in the lansing area? I go to MSU and I really want to get involved in a photography club around there.

you think finding or developing a photo club in the Lansing area is hard - try it in the U.P. - lol

I started my own. It's company sponsored, so you have to work here to join, but they give us cash if we apply for grants and let us use company resources. We are digital and film, although mostly digital.

$10/year to join with monthly meetings, monthly homework assignments and frequent outings. We've been in business less then a year and we already have 37 members and have our first show coming up in September!!!
