I was going through equipment reviews on some website and someone wrote "Not built for much use. Breaks down around 4000 pictures." about the Digital Rebel. I've had mine for a little less than 4 months and I'm up to 4675 pictures and so far I haven't had any problems. Has anyone here had issues at only 4000? This person probably doesn't know what the heck he's talking about or just got a fauly camera. What do you think?

i'm over 7000 photos ( knock on wood ) with not a single issue.
it's been soaked with water twice, used in -15 deg F weathera number of times. and all around taken on a quite a few journeys.

Soaked? Was it at all protected? The cold or heat don't really worry me, but water does. I went white water rafting in a beautiful river with beautiful waterfalls and natural pools and i dont have a single picture cause I was afraid to bring any of my cameras and I didn't think of buying a single use waterproof camera :(

I've had mine almost a year, 7400 photo's .... and it fell off a 6 foot high shelf directly onto the hot shoe connector which had to be bend back into proper position with plyers ... still no problems.

My Rebel has been dropped from waist height in a parking lot, made to sit in the florida summer heat in my car for weeks and lightly soaked in rain. It's survived very well, I'd say, and I'm up to 4600 pictures.

the 1st time the water sort of ruined my CF card - i can record, and download but some pics are funktified..

it seems about 30-60minutes in 20deg F will kill a charged battery

no it was not protected - either time.

i took this - this week from a kayak

i don't think i would intentionally subject it to a soaking.

Now you tell me! I just submerged mine in the bath tub performing this test. Great! Thanks a lot!!! :o) Now my wife is going to kill me!!!

I am however very glad to hear that the DR seems to be quite durable.

Well I haven't shot as much as most of you guys/gals but I am at about 3000 with no problems, with light rain exposure, and one drop on cement from about knee high level.

I've never dropped mine but i'm on about 9000ish photos with not a single problem :)

You guys are a bunch of camera abusers and may need help. Either that or I need help because I baby my camera and won't even let others touch my camera. I even string my camera around my neck with the neck strap prior to lifting it out of the case.

Either way I'm again glad to hear that the DR is a durable camera in case I would have a miss-hap. :o\

not camera abusers... camera users

I've had mine for almost a year with no problems, and I tend to beat the crap out of my equipment. My only build-quality complaint is with the door over the CF card compartment. The fit is loose now so it gives the camera a squishy feel sometimes. Other than that, it's great.

Dropped mine out of the car on to the asphalt and I just hit 4075. Have had it 5 months and still no problems. (:

the rebel is made to last for how many shutter clicks?
07/11/2004 11:23:35 AM · #19
Apparently 10000 - but I don't believe that.

Took in excess of 4000 photos, been in freezing cold weather and in exceeding heat. No problems so far

Konador, you think it's more or less?

I have taken about 10,000 shots, maybe 15,000 and I have sent it in twice, first just to be cleaned and then I was getting error 1 and 99 messages and they replaced the shutter. I have not really used it since (bought mark ii) so not even sure if fixed well. It was also believed that the rebel triggered some problem with the 100-400mmL IS USM which within only a few weeks needed to be replaced as well.

how much was the shutter replacement fee?

i'll break 10,000 -w/in the 1st year of owning it, and if it goes it should be covered under the extended warranty i bought.

my rebel was only 6 mos or so old, so it and lens were all under warranty, so only cost me to ship to canon. Canon paid for the return shipping costs. Not sure how much would be if had to pay. The real drag is going 2 weeks or so without a camera while you wait for the repairs. : (
