It's almost a daily irritation to see the incorrect use of apostrophes in topic titles and forum posts. In the interest of improving the readability of the DPC forum, it would be a good thing for all to read and understand: Apostrophes

If one does not want to learn the rules, just take a moment to run your spelling and grammar checker incorporated into your browser before posting.

So, you say, "Who cares?". All I can say, grammatical and spelling errors interfere with the effectiveness of the message one is trying to deliver.

So basicly you are saying that people that use the internet that english is not their primary language irritate you.

Yay, Richard!
Yes, the misuse of the apostrophe has become epidemic. It's time to hit "reset."

Grammars's overrated. ;o)

There are other missteps like using 'I seen' instead of the correct 'I saw' or 'I have seen'

...and don't forget to 'revert back' to something!

One I'm seeing more frequently is the use of "loose" instead of "lose", makes for some interesting sentences!

It's not those for whom English is a second (or third or fourth) language that are the most frequent offenders.
FWIW, Richard didn't rant about it, and he helpfully included a link that should clarify when to use and not use the apostrophe. We can all benefit from a review, and the effectiveness of our messages will benefit.

Edit for typo

I admit it. I'll occasionally add an apostrophe where it doesn't belong. Simply because I don't want to say that I sent pms to people. My female issues are my own. I'd rather send pm's. :P

Why not write PMs instead?

You can send me pms, but I will return it unopened :-)

I didn't know that an occasional misspell or puncuation was catastrophic to life as we know it. Usually when I read a post and there is a minor error I attribute it to fat fingers, wine, beer, or they don't really care about it being that exact. This forum is not an English class. As long as they get the point across it shouldn't matter.

So the fact that i repeatedly failed English (not to mention Spanish) and math, I should be banned from the internetz? LOL your so nice.

Outstanding observation. That misuse is too common. In real life, I've seen many people, who should know better, make that error. I think it might be because the spell checker does not catch this, because it's not a misspelling. Some grammar checkers do not flag this either. This is an error that slips through the cracks.

I just looked at three browsers. Safari 5.0.3, FF 3.6.13 and Chrome 9.0.597.84. It appears they all have built-in grammar and spelling checkers. The operation seems to be a little different. Safari underlines with green my grammatical errors. Spelling errors are underlined in red. For the grammatical errors underlined in green, if one hovers the cursor above the underlined section, an explanation of the perceived error will appear in a text box. (I don't always agree with the suggested correction, but most of the time, the browser is pretty good at flagging my mistakes.)

Then and than are common mistakes made. BUT, I really don't think that DPC is an English class, so I don't worry too much about it. LOL

Good luck with your crusade, Richard. I tried the same thing few years ago, but I gave up pretty quickly.

Regarding h2's comment, earlier, "Why not write PMs instead?", the answer to that would be "Because PMs are very personal, and singling someone out to criticize their grammar can be perceived as unbearably supercilious. Posting a forum thread is a way of getting the point across without actually calling any individual out."

I'm pretty sure it's correct to say a lot of this is happening now because of over-reliance on spell-and-grammar checkers. I'm even seeing it in professionally-edited and -published books, by established authors. It's amazing how many errors of the loose/lose sort are creeping in nowadays.

I must say that I'm with Hahn on this one. The incorrect use of "Loose" and "Lose" drives me crazy too. The misuse of commas is my personal pet peeve. Sentences like this drive me nuts, "Your shot, is kind of well, you need, to kind of come up with, a way to better communicate, what you're thinking." That is like nails on a blackboard. The misuse of "good" and "well" is another common mistake that I see and hear all the time. I constantly correct my wife on that one, and she constantly slaps me.

I'm going to take a nap :P

Robert, Wendy was meaning that she incorrectly uses an apostrophe when writing pms (pm's) as it seems more elegant to her, and can't me mistaken for pre-menstrual syndrome (we call it PMT in Britain). Oliver was suggesting that capitalising solved that problem.

Common Errors in English Usage is a fascinating read. Although some will think this is carrying on the topic, ad nauseam.

To and Too
How often do you see someone post that he is to tired to comment.

There and Their and They're.
Trust me, they often get interchanged in dpc forums.

... the list goes on...

To and Too can be a typo as well. The thought from there goes to proof reading.
At "Trust me, they often get interchanged in dpc forums." It gets interchanged EVERYWHERE including pen and paper. All of these things get discussed in the class room.

Personally i thought DPC was supposed to be capitalized.

Actually, I do write PMs -- I was just being silly. :)

If you use PMT in Britain, what do you use for photo multiplier tubes, then?
