So I just got the 80-200mm Nikon 2.8.
Yay for me.
Anyway, since it has been super-cold I haven't really felt compelled to use it much.
So today I was fiddling around, taking some images to make sure I got a decent lens. Well, the images were kinda soft but it was really hazy out and there may have been moisture on the lens.
ANYWAY …
I noticed that the lens is not perfectly attached to the d300 body. There is a bit of "give" and the lens turns a very small amount at the base when mounted. To be sure I wasn't mistaken, I tried other lenses and had my wife try it as well. So here I am freaking out.
I registered the product on Nikon's site and the serial # didn't correspond with what Nikon had for that lens but it explained that it might be grey market and allows people to enter additional serial #s however they want. I suppose this should have been a red flag?
I bought this from Amazon on December 31st. I'm thinking I should request a return without exchange. Or maybe there is something I don't know?

I'm pretty sure all my lenses have a little bit of "turn" when attached, it's really small, not enough to notice it when looking at it, but you can feel it when you try.
Make sure the lens is actually faulty, do some controlled test shots on it with a tripod and bear in mind that being a longer lens you're more likely to get blur unless you have a shutter speed somewhere in the region of 1.5x focal length or faster. |

| Well i bought the Nikon 80-200 as well also possibly a grey market even though it came with nikon warranty ... mine has a problems as well that i put down to the old design of the lens it also has a bit of give almost like it is not tight enough .... slack in the elements when the camera is tilted up and down but i think they are both common issues ... initially i had focus dramas and i discovered it was caused through the filter i used [1a B+W] ... a good quality filter worked ok on my 12-24 Tokina but not on the Nikon for some reason ... now i shoot without the filter and despite the clunks and bayonet feeling loose it takes great well focused shots and would not part with it! |

My came with a warrantee as well.
But at this point, I am considering buying used. Seems like if a person bought this lens they are serious about photography and would know if the lens is good. There is a risk either way, I suppose, but the cost would be less =)
Seems like many people move on to the 70-200 so the market is full of 80-200s.
