A hand gun is not a deterrent, it is a tool to be used for self-defense. It should only be visible when it is being fired.

These guys do. Of course I wouldn't recommend just anyone do what they do on a daily basis.

I find that rent-a-cops often turn up when I go out shooting - thereby protecting me from harm AND America from my pictures. You all should be thankful!

(And I know a few folks who've contributed to that Army page, Matt. They do good work.)

@ OP, Google USCCA and get their newsletter for a lot of good responsible information about concealed carry (44K members) .

@ Melethia Photography is not a crime blog

Interesting blog. I have no desire to wander about photographing cops, though. I just like taking pictures. Apparently in a lot of places where people don't like pictures being taken. But hey, it's the price we pay for a free society. Wait. That may be a different argument. Never mind. Carry on!

That's an amazing piece of advice. As for the original poster, I believe that you are making a mistake putting yourself into any position where you feel you might need a gun. That's just a bad idea all the way around. If you feel like you need to carry a gun in order to pursue your hobby, you need to find a different hobby or conduct your hobby somewhere else. Period.

A gun should never be drawn unless you intend to kill someone for the purpose of saving your life or possibly the life of someone else. Your camera gear is not worth the price of someone's life, even if that someone is hauling ass with your camera gear.

My advice would be not to carry while out practicing your hobby. Let me explain why.

I grew up with guns and have shot many. My father was a cop, my brother was a cop and my cousin is a cop. I served in the military. I retired from 30 years of service as a firefighter, many of them on medical aid units. During all this time I've seen numerous gunshot cases, many fatal. Not once did I see someone successfully defend themselves or their home with their gun. Not saying it has never happened, just that the odds are against you according to my non-scientific sampling. I have seen murder by gun, normally bad guy against bad guy, only twice bad guy shooting good guy, both in store robberies. The rest of the cases were either someone shooting themselves, shooting a family member or having their kids shot themselves. All those cases were tragic and happened to people who thought they had it under control, trained themselves and their family, etc.

Moral of the story for me is it is just not worth it. I don't even own a gun anymore and let my carry permit expire years ago. I'm not about to shoot anyone over "stuff" anyway, hell, I'd be more likely to get shot first.

Take it for what it is worth.

I only carry a rocket in my pocket. But seriously; guns are not for me except when I used to hunt deer and moose game many moons ago. I'd rather have someone take my gear than hurt or possibly kill someone. I can get new gear. A dead or crippled person cannot be replaced.

I never know whether to laugh or simply shake my head in amazement when the topic of gun ownership/use turns up on a photography website (and I'm surprised at just how often it does turn up on here). It astounds me how pervasive gun culture in the US is. I, like so many others outside of the US, find the idea of carrying a firearm, concealed or otherwise, absolute anathema.

I'm sure I've just offended half of US members on here and you have my apologies for doing so. Just my $0.02.

Both great points and I thank you for posting.

I have a 9mm S/W that I carried with me when I was in Alaska, as they did not require a permit to own or carry - just the federal paperwork you fill out when purchasing. I moved back to MI a few months ago (oops, still need to go register my handgun) and no longer carry it with me as I do not have a CC permit. I do not intend on getting one either. The handgun is kept at home ready to use should I ever have someone break in and threaten my life.
Like Juliett, I do carry a good and very sharp hunting knife with me.

Skip had the best advice when it comes to shooting in areas you do not feel are safe...go with someone, have a fully charged cell phone, tell family or friends where you'll be and when you should be back, and if you can get in good with the police let them know what and where you'll be up to and ask them to swing by a time or too if they are available.

And mine. Amazing that anyone could even consider killing someone or something. I just cannot relate to that.

I have a Ruger 9mm. My husband has a safe full of guns. I do not have a permit for concealed weapons. Our guns are used for hunting, target shooting, and in the worse case scenario...home preotection, if someone makes it into the house past my dogs. When I'm out shooting if someone wants my gear, they can have it. I have insurance on it.

I have a concealed permit and anytime I am out of the home, I am carrying a 9MM.

QuKi- It is part of who we are. It is our constitutional right and many will
take advantage of that.

Carry a gun, you must be joking.

What would happen if everyone was allowed a gun.
I bet there would be 1000`s of deaths.

Depending upon which state you live in penalties go from prison to nothing.

I have my permit now. I have a Berretta 92F 9mm but it's too big to carry concealed. I have to go to a gun show to check out some of the smaller ones. Once I get it I will carry everywhere it is legal for me to do so. Now I have to be wearing a giant winter jacket. I was thinking about the Smith & Wesson Bodyguard (380).

It is for the protection of my family and myself. I don't think people who carry a concealed weapon plan on using it. It amazes me that people commit crimes and would attempt to injure or harm another individual. Since they are making that choice to commit a crime, shouldn't they suffer the consequences if they happen to attack or injure an armed person. The more honest law abiding people that carry concealed weapons the better. It's the bad guys that should not be allowed to have guns and that's who the tighter gun control laws should be aimed at.

The assumption I see being made here and used to argue against carrying is that people don't want to shoot someone over "stuff". That's not the point aside from the fact that stuff isn't worth killing anyone. However, why should you assume that someone who will take your stuff will be happy to take your stuff and be done with it? They might. Then again, they might decide that it's better if there were no witnesses or they may just think that you aren't scared enough so they tie you up and beat you or your loved ones...or worse. They may be amped up on meth or craving their next fix, willing to do anything. Clearly, if they are willing to rob you, they don't regard the law as an obstacle to taking what they want. Why would you place your life and the lives of your loved one in the hands of such people? Those of you who say such things don't happen. Just Google what happened to the Petit family in Connecticut and imagine the horror of their last moments.

Everyone's NOT allowed a gun. The criminals will have guns, regardless of the law.

Years ago, I moved to Connecticut from Idaho after a brief stay with relatives I managed to land a job in New London. Being a long commute from Old Lyme and me having no transportation I had to use my first check to rent a room in a somewhat seedy section of town. On my 3erd day there being dropped at the buss stop and a few groceries at a quickie mart, I walked “home” it was late evening. At a corner about 2 blocks from my destination I was greeted by a guy holding a small handgun in the passenger side of a older sedan asking for my money. With no available cover close, I set down my bags as if to comply, in doing, I luckily found 2 good sized rocks. As I was standing I threw the first rock hitting the rear passenger window, the second rock found it’s target. As the driver speed off, I ran away. The next day with the help of a generous manager I was able to relocate to a better living situation.

The moral, Had I a gun, I would have probably tried to use it, by the time I had fumbled it out, I would have been likely been shot. I truly believe doing the unexpected saved my a$$ that day.
