I was out at dark the other night in a very dark off beaten path taking some shots. I also do a lot of shooting in the city and I was wondering if anyone here has a conceal carry permit and takes a handgun with them when they are out shooting? I mean some of us have thousands of dollars in equipment and we sometimes shoot in less then ideal locals. I don't personally have one but I have been thinking about it. So how about you? And has anyone had any scary experiences while shooting?

my mark iin is a weapon, especially with the 70-200 on it; it will leave a mark. the monopod can also come in handy.

;-)

--------------------------

don't go to those places and/or don't go alone.
always make sure somebody knows where you're going.
don't leave home without a fully charged cell phone.
get friendly with the local police and check in with them before you go certain places.
(this especially includes shooting traffic from overpasses)
lastly, NOTHING is more valuable than your life...it's irreplaceable.

I own a handgun for the home but have not acquired a conceal carry as of yet. If you are in situations were you feel like your life could be in danger you should avoid them if possible. If that is not possible then before you even think of getting a concealed carry permit I would make sure you know the ins and outs of your weapon. Too many people do not learn and respect a firearm properly before taking the plunge into ownership. My advice to anyway that plans to carry is to make sure you are firing your weapon on a semi regular basis and know your weapon and how to use!!

I do and I do not take it with me.

The biggest reason is that I would rather lose my camera equipment than kill someone. You can never go back from that,

But with that being said>

I do have a 10 inch Tanto strapped to the side of my Tamrac that goes every where with me

i never understood the logic behind a concealed weapon, if im going to carry a weapon, its to be a deterrent and its not going to be concealed. I would want you to see it and move along...

I carry a banana. Sometimes I use it to shoot pictures.

Having it visible at all times immediately makes you a thread to everyone. When concealed you are only a threat to the ones who threaten you. Unless you are in law enforcement you don't want this.

if im a threat to them, they aren't a threat to me :) i'd rather avoid the confrontation then to have to end it.

Everyone have CC permit should carry handguns at all times not only when go out in dangerous places in dangerous times... with exception of places CC/OC not permitted.

So, rather than being frightened of people you encounter, you want to be the one THEY are scared of? I guess that makes sense, but it's kind of alien to my way of thinking.

I own, but do not carry. One of the best pieces of advice I ever got was, the problem with a gun is it will talk you into staying, when it is time to leave.

If you pull a gun, it complicates your day. Had a friend about 15 years ago who wound up in a situation where he felt the need to pull a gun. The bad guy said, "Go ahead and shoot me", and turned his back and walked away. Jim decided not to shoot to shoot the guy in the back, and try to justify it to the police. What the guy took out of his car wasn't near worth what it could have cost him had he pulled the trigger.

I'm not a pacifist by any means. But I have also never wanted to take a picture so bad that I was willing to put myself, or anyone else at significant risk of violence, to get it.

a lot of these replies terrify me. I'm guessing that most of the responses are from people living in the US. I got to tell you - most of the rest of the world does not understand how you feel carrying guns makes you safer. And after the events of the last week in Arizona I'm even more mystified by the attitude towards lethal weapons.

IMO your best defence is intelligence - think about where and what you're photgraphing and take sensible precautions.

Your Tanto's different from my Tanto, LOL. I guess mine must be a "tanto-style survival knife" or something :-) Not that I OWN it, I just googled it and that was the first decent-size image that came up...

LOL, Bear

I also have found that screaming like a little girl and running as fast as you can, sometimes helps too!

Open carry is legal in Colorado, outside of Denver. I have a Smith & Wesson M&P40... mostly for home defense. I occasionally carry it in public, if there are some dangerous situations possible. To acquire a gun in Colorado, one has to pass a background check, but there is no license required. Neither the background check results, nor the gun purchase, are recorded.

Open carry just makes you the most obvious first target...the one those bent on mayhem need to eliminate first. With concealed carry, anyone may be armed and the bad guys won't know who poses a threat to them. You might as well paint a bulls-eye on your chest.

The other thing to consider is the likelihood of someone calling the police to report a "man with a gun", regardless of what else it is that you're doing and if you pose a threat or not.

Some interesting ideas on this. Thanks to all who replied. I was just curious as to what others do and if anyone had any bad experiences while out alone or even with a customer. I grew up around firearms and am quite comfortable with them but just have never purchased a hand gun for myself. I'm not sure I want to spend the money on one now but maybe in the future.
