Is there any easy way to find where photos sold on stock sites were published?

If it was posted online somewhere, you can try TinEye. It will search and try to find matches based on your selection.

Thanks. None of the images I sold recently came up in TinEye.
Besides asking everyone to keep an eye out for images in ads and things, there's no way to find out where the images might have been used? I can't find anything about this on the stock's web sites.

I've found a lot of mine simply by Googling "Alan Freed shutterstock."

Royalty-free sites do not/cannot provide this information, partly because the nature of the license does not require specific information about the ultimate use. For example, under Shutterstock's subscription plan, a designer may download ten possible images for a brochure; the client picks one out and the others are never used, but those photographers still get paid a royalty for the download.

With a rights-managed ("traditional" or "macrostock") agency (e.g. Alamy, Corbis, Getty), the image will be individually licensed for a specific project, and you may be able to know the details of the project -- I don't know for sure since I have no images with any of those agencies.

i did a search one time similar to alan's and found one of mine on a cd cover pretty cool -- never found the cd, though. i figure it was one of those destined for the $1.99 bin. . . .

That's a fantastic idea; found a few books that I have credits in. Now I've just got to find them in a book shop to see it :)
