Would I be right in thinking that there is likely to be raw sewage in that water? Not sure I would be paddling in it...

Most of them seem to be in Shepards Bush - London.

Working as dentists... ;-)

I'm originally from that part of London myself.

With the volume and rate of flow of the water it is probably pretty safe (biologically, not physically) at this point, especially if you are upstream of the local treatment facility.

Sewerage, debris, bodies, snakes, crocodiles(yes apparently a large one was photographed exiting Brisbane flood waters), other toxins from rotting animals or other waste products....nope, it isn't safe. But it doesn't stop us when we need to.

The river has peaked and is starting to slowly recede.
We were very lucky, our backyard is a mess, but the house is dry!
We haven't had internet for a couple of days, but we never even lost our electricity.

It could have been much worse, if only everyone had been this lucky.

Some very local flood photos

I believe there are 2, maybe 3, cyclones forming on both sides of Australia....Victoria and Tasmania are copping it at the moment and rain from one of the weather spots up in northern Queensland....as to what these will do or cause to the already saturated country, is anybody's guess. What I do know is we must not become complacent just yet. Other members may now be starting to experience what many of us have just gone through. Think now of recovery in your area and for the well being of others that may now be experiencing what you have just been through.

Edit to add...some members may not reside in these areas, but they may be holidaying somewhere there.

My husband has just packed up the ute to head down to Brisbane to help with the cleanup.
Wheelbarrow, brooms, shovels, water pressure hose.
He's picking up my girlfriends husband also. We'll probably head down with them tomorrow.

There was some suburban flooding in my city, Ballarat, yesterday, and many outlying towns really got drowned. Some of those towns were copping their second flood in a few months, and I think there are some Victorian towns that have been hit more times than that too. The whole east side of Australia is experiencing floods to some extent, with Queensland the worst hit, and parts of the west have been as well. Still, as they say, someone is always worse off - and it seems to be Brazil. Sympathies to the Brazilians.

You live in one of the few places where they are the appropriate vehicle, unlike in San Francisco.

Never read Nevil Shute, eh? (Famous one was On the Beach) Naturally, A Town Called Alice was my favorite, and I visited Alice Springs a while back.

Meanwhile, I have heard from my sort-of-relatives in Brisbane (Ipswich). One is high and reasonably dry, the others have been evacuated and are with them.

This huge disaster affects us all.

Actually, I have a copy of On The Beach on my bookshelf, but I haven't read it in many years and I guess I didn't remember seeing that word there ... I was thinking about re-reading it anyway, now I have a "good reason" to ... ;-)

You Aussies probably don't need to see any more photos of the flooding, but here's a link to The Big Picture's collection. Wow, I hadn't realized the flooding had been going on so long.

All my family are ok in Brisbane, Nanango, and Toowoomba. Whew! I remember the '74 floods, it was just mind boggling and devastating. Food was being rationed at the supermarkets, families were only allowed a certain amount of milk, flour, butter and basic essentials.

I feel for all those that are suffering. More so for the ones that are unable to be reimbursed by insurance.

We have been struggling here for weeks. Most days you don't see any milk or bread, rarely eggs or any meat and fruit and vege are like hens teeth. If you can get it, it is so bruised and chunks out of them and high priced. I paid $6 for a loaf of bread the other day and today I bought 3kg of sugar for $12.

Not sure about the beer but a carton premixed carton of cans is over $100.

Frozen veges are difficult to get and fortunately we don't eat icecream as that was pretty bare as well.

Checked out fast foods the other day...what a joke! Red rooster had burgers but no chicken, KFC had chicken but no burgers or salads, McDonalds just had a closed sign.
