I don't know much about Canon stuff but My friend wants to buy a Canon 550D and he would like to know... do all Canon's lenses fits all Canon's body. He might want to go FF later. Whats Canon EF-S , Canon EF, Canon FD and FL lenses? Please help out a Nikon user. =)

| I'm sure someone else will give a more detailed answer, but a lot of Canon lenses can't be used on full frame cameras. |

All the modern Canon lenses can be used on all the modern Canon dSLR cameras, EXCEPT: any lens designated "EF-S" can only be used on the cropped-sensor cameras, not the full-frame bodies. At this point, FF Canons are 5D, 5D2, and 1DSMk2 and Mk3.

Oh ho! Gotcha!
EF-S lenses also cannot be used on the 1-series bodies, even though they are 1.3x crop not full frame... |

I am pretty sure the EF-S also will not work on the APS-H (1.3x) sensor Canons as well, the 1D, 1Dmk2, 1Dmk3 and the 1Dmk4
These have larger sensors than the APS-C (1.6x) but are still not full frame. The EF-S lenses only work on the APS-C sensors.

FD lenses and the older FL lenses can't easily be used on EOS bodies. There are adapters, but there are many drawbacks... mostly related to lack of electronic communications between new camera bodies and old lenses. No autofocus! In my mind, I associate my old slr film camera bodies with FD lenses.
EOS bodies go with EF lenses, subject to the EF-S restrictions mentioned above.
Nothing wrong with buying a vintage Canon film camera body and using an FD lens.... for film photography. Thanks for triggering old memories.

Hehe, or if you already have some EOS stuff, adding a EOS 35mm film body is a great idea, as then all of your fancy new lenses are fully functional! (Except the EF-S lenses of course.... :) )
