I really admire this girl's work. I went to high school with her and wish I had half the skill that she does. Any clues on how she gets the drama and tones in her pics?

Looks like nothing more unusual than proper exposure and using RAW to push the dynamic range a little..

And some super glue to hold her eyes open that big and wide.

I kid, but it's great portrait work.

My best guess, would be lighten & linear contrast(curves)- in CS5 at the tuoch of a button and comes with a layer mask,

other things that would help would be RAW and pushing the range as coryboehne said, if she shoots with a Fujifilm S5 Pro which was wedding camera of the year 2007 then it has a lot to do with that as it has film simulation for skin tone and dual sensor so it can either be a 12MP camera with 100% Dynamic range or splits the sensor 6mp but can achive 400% dynamic range - all the more for playing with.

I must say though with great emphasis, the original picture has to be a good picture (you cant polish s*@t)
Also I agree with fotoman, best thing is to ask her !!!

Well, I asked - she uses Itty Bitty, Color Shift, and TRA actions with some Kubota.. but good lord each set has 50 plus actions. No clue which actions do what and what combos.

Really no different than someone telling you "I use curves to achieve the effect." If they don't elaborate, the information is much less useful.
I kind of get a chuckle out of all these canned actions. Do these people not know how to use the available tools to create their own look? Are they just lazy, or do they not know how to use the tools?

I dunno... all could come into play, but I'll admit, I use Alien Skins Exposure for processing a lot of my projects just for the simple fact that it's quick and, most importantly, consistent.

For things like wedding and portrait albums, consistency does make for a more salable product.

Ive just finished a 28 age Mario acerboni Tumacho for a full wedding I did in November,

The only thing really needed is:

Curves

Portrait skin retouching, if you dont know how get yourself a Chris Orwig tut / Scott kelby book

Colour adjustment (on a calibrated screen, I use spyder 2 pro)

and most inportanly IMAGINATION & CREATIVITY, complete each wedding and album like it is your first and you want to impress.

Oh and a good tool to have completly optional is - cloning out artifacts that you dont want, I had to remove some air conditioning from a wall in the background, without that it was unusable.

I have looked at the actions and they are good no doubt, but I agree with kirbic it removes the artistic licence from your images, it\\\'s this artistic flare which you should grow, and be able to showcase which means a customer picks you over the other 10,000 wedding photographers available.

I still say that your freinds images are beautiful, but I have seen this type of image before, clean, clear, high key white point with colour contrast, very Brett florens / ryan brenizer

I think that the middle ground woul be topaz labs, creativity with a nudge of help.

hope you find all this blarb helpful!!!
