My energy should be OK, I just have to get back for dialysis. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone again and meet new DPC'rs. I'll be just hanging at the Market.

yeah I am all about group photos and pictures with others. One of my main goals, i'll admit, is getting a shot of myself with Ken and then hoping he'll give it some kind if crazy treatment in PS

Well assuming my beer gut is bigger than yours, the first thing I would obviously do is switch bodies.

A good place for a group shot that large would be Victor Steinbeck Park at the north end of the Market. We will fit in well with all the street people and as a bonus there are a few good backdrops, waterfront, totem pole, etc.

That works, don't have to walk too far to get to it.

The train ride was awesome. I took some pictures, but there were times sitting at a meal that I wished I was carrying my camera when passing various scenic views. I also wished that the windows on the train were (ever) washed. I think I got a few decent shots, but haven't looked at any, yet. Oooh! I just discovered that I do have a way to view them on the computer I am using, so I'll upload and link a couple after I've converted them to jpeg.

I whole heartily recommend rail travel, though. There's time to just enjoy the trip and the view and relax, while someone else worries about the driving.

Yes, I've taken the Coast Starlight 2-3 times in the past few years ... you really have to anticipate your shots though -- your subject or the gap in the trackside trees will usually only be there for a second or two. I use it as an exercise in action photography.

Another problem (besides the dirty windows) is that some of the best views take place when the light is getting bad ... I have lots of dark and/or blurry pictures ... I recently took the train down to L.A. -- lots of photo-ops along that route as well, and the trip takes place (mostly) in daylight in both directions ... :-(

These are all taken from the train between northern California and Tacoma, Washington:

Okay, it's agreed.

We'll all wander into Starbucks at 11:00 pretending we don't recognize each other (shouldn't be hard). At the stroke of 11:00, and I mean exactly at 11:00 ... we'll all raise our cameras and start shooting all the other people in and around the restaurant. Baristas, customers, each other, cops, bums, clued and clueless. If that doesn't get the GTG off to a bang up start ... nothing else will. Of course we could all be arrested, but hey, that would be fun too. Think of the thread traffic about photog rights that would generate!!

Who's with me on this???

what if we all met up just outside of *bux and Ken gave us the william wallace speech from braveheart, then we could all go charging in, cameras raised high, screaming from the bowels of our lungs?
01/21/2011 09:01:15 PM · #189
I like that. I can imagine Ken yelling "I'm William Wallace, and the rest of you will be spared. Go back to England and tell them...Scotland is free!"
or

"Aye, fight and you may die. Run, and you'll live... at least a while. And dying in your beds, many years from now, would you be willin' to trade ALL the days, from this day to that, for one chance, just one chance, to come back here and tell our enemies that they may take our lives, but they'll never take... OUR FREEDOM!"

I am picking up a friend and potential new member who'll be tagging along with me--will try to be at or around the Starbucks area by 11am, but if I'm a bit late, will no doubt run into folks walking about.

And a special thanks to ScooterMcNutty for arranging this! I've had to miss the Seattle GTGs for years now, due to schedule conflicts. Will be great to meet all (or most) of you :-)

In reality what will happen is that I will show up with a nametag that says "Art Roflmao" and someone will yell out "you're not Art Roflmao!" and another will yell "Art Roflmao is 7 feet tall and burns villages by the hundreds!" And then I'll say "yeah, and he shoots fire from his eyes and lightning from his arse! I AM Art Roflmao!"

...and then I'll shoot lightning from my arse. It should be fun. Looking forward!

nice!

I've just uploaded 10 of my better shots from the trip so far into a portfolio (not all 10 thumbs here... feel free to browse). I am really disappointed that I was unable to do any processing on these, since I don't have access to any of my usual software while I'm on the road. The jpeg conversion seems a bit poor, but the originals might not be that great to begin with. At least these caught my eye as having some potential. :)

See you all tomorrow! I'll be ducking lightning...

Dr.Confuser's idea is interesting and reminds me of this youtube video. Were some of you behind that?

Thanks -- you've got some nice ones too! I have a pretty good idea where you took this shot ... at least you were smart enough to not have the WB set to tungsten ... ;-)

Be sure to save some room on your memory cards -- now you know where the good scenes are for the trip back. I usually get up to the Tacoma area once a year -- maybe we can have a South Sound GTG sometime.
