I neither know enough about technicals ro the product line to figure what would be best for me. I know I'm not the most gentle, and I drag my camera with me everywhere, so the known robust quality of the camera chassis I have now in the D300s is a plus, but this new kid D7000 sure sounds like it's a real stunner of a performer.

Anyone have any firsthand knowledge/experience of/with this new piece that's familiar with the brick chassis I'm toting now?

Jeb, I toying with an upgrade myself and I have looked at both but I have also tossed around the (very compelling) thought of going full frame with the D700, for the money it is every bit the work horse that our D 200's have been. Just as rugged but much better in low light and the obvious advantage of shooting full frame is pushing my hands in that direction. I'm not sure if the lure of having video is for me oh but to have full frame.......

< walks away dragging knuckles and drooling >

All the best to you and yours.

MAX!

Oddly, I'm really not interested in going full frame. My lenses are DX and I like the multiplication facter of the crop sensor.

Hey Jeb, I shoot the D300s and have shot quite a bit with the D7000. I have a friend that just bought one. I personally prefer the robust D300, the D700 is a dandy camera but a little too small for my hands. Like you I drag a camera every where, I do like the tank like qualities of the D300..That being said, I think the D7000 is a dandy camera, it would make a great addition to anyone's arsenal. This no doubt has been no help at all to you, but thought I would throw in my 2 cents..

I'm not going to get rid of my D200, so if I got the D7000, and broke it, I'd still have the ol' workhorse. And the D7000 does have a magnesium chassis. Do you think the D7000 shoots better quality images than the D300s?

I currently have a D90 with which i've been more than happy with, i've lugged it all around Asia and Europe, even dropped it if only for a fraction of a second in a lake in Ireland, once it was dried out on a radiator for 24 h the thing worked like new, so I think the D7000 which is supposed to be considerably more robust will be fine for anybody.

Personally I was considering going FF but the weight factor keeps pulling me back, i just love going out with a prime and the D90 its so light and in my opinion does attract a lot less attention. I'm probably being a bit biased towards the D7000 because i just ordered one yesterday, hopefully it will be slightly better than the D90, then I'm happy

Choice should be easy. D300s!

I have my eye on that baby but am probably going to wait for a newer model or an update.

Jeb you need to think outside the box. This is your big chance to escape the dark side and come over to Canon - Explorers of Light.

I have the D300s.. It's a brilliant camera, which I got about two months prior to the D7000 coming out.
Given the choice, I think I'd have saved the money and gone for the D7000.
The difference between the two are minimal: faster frames per second (which I don't really benefit much from), and more AF points (which admittedly, is nice to have, but at what cost?)
