Effective right now, you must fulfill one of the following requirements to submit to the current challenge:

- Vote on 95% of the images in the current challenge vote.
OR
- Comment on 25% of the images in the current challenge vote.

This should be a positive move on the site -- people who want the feedback and criticisms of their fellow site users should give that back in return.

First-time submitters are exempt from this requirement.

What lousy timing for me! I started voting with Curves, and Fear will be the first challenge since then for which I have not voted on every photograph. I am extremely phobic about something that is a frequent topic in the Fear challenge, and there is no way on earth I am going to be able to look at some of the Fear photos, much less vote on them. (Frankly, I'm not even going back to look at the thumbnails again.) Obviously, they fit the challenge well (at least from my point of view), so I decided that the fairest thing to do was to not vote on any photos in Fear. Now I can't enter Free Study. I suppose I'll have to work this week instead. :-(

Multiple accounts are monitored on the site, and if caught, all accounts will be suspended indefinitely and IPs may be banned. This is a horrible idea, and it's against the rules. Don't do it.

Amphian, may I suggest the comment route? I'd much rather users took that route anyway!

I always fulfill one of these requirements so I'm just curious... are there actually people who don't vote who submit an image? I almost prefer the other way around. If you haven't submitted you can't vote. But then, I don't want to have to vote on 250 pictures.

I like this, though I vote on all of the entries ( or none if I am traveling).
I would like to see an improvement (if possible) in the way the site works. I would like to find a way to update votes and comments on all or multiple pictures before the info is uploaded. Sometimes it seems forever to move to the next photo after I update a score or a comment, and wait for everything to be downloaded again.

Maverick,

You should still be able to submit. You have to vote on 95% or comment on 25% of the fear entries before you can enter free study.

One dialup user I know uses two IE windows to vote. While he is voting in one window, the other is loading another picture. He enters his vote and comment, clicks submit, then presses alt-tab to go to the other window. By the time he's there the picture is usually loaded.

That's a pretty darn good idea :) Drew should post that somewhere on the voting page as a tip... :)

Drew: Sorry, I just don't like the new rule. For instance, I just wasn't into "fear", so thought I had no business voting on it. Yet, that shouldn't stop me from submitting to challenges I feel into or worthy of. I rather liked the hint you gave earlier re: if you submit, you must vote on all the submissions, or at least a high percentage thereof, for that challenge. I vote on every photo every week, and try to give comments where appropriate, or where I feel I have useful input. I know others do not, so I see the motivation behind it, but ask for a reevaluation of the method.
Thanks.

Do I understand that if neither of these requirements are met, the current submission is disqualified? Or are future submissions rejected? At what point in the voting is a photo removed from the current challenge?

Could it be that some busy/lazy/uncommunicative photographer shoots an phenomenal photo, but neither comments nor votes, so on Sunday evening the week's voting results are recalculated?

I am with Karen on this--however, my reason has to do more with quality of voting. Someone once mentioned an idea of forced comment. The consensus was that if you force someone to comment, then comments would be unrepresentative of how the person feels about the photograph. They would simply put some sort of text/spaces/random characters in the comment field. If a photographer is interested in submitting to a current challenge, what will prevent him/her from voting 5s across the board on a challenge he has no interest in? My thinking is forced votes are no more objective than forced comments.

Crisa58 -- I think you're confused.... These voting requirements must be met during the CURRENT week, in order to submit for the NEXT week.

We got a lot of crap about people going out of town, business or pleasure, and not being able to vote -- only to have their photos disqualified. One scenario I just thought of that makes it even worse... You submit your photo. If it does well, you vote, and it counts. If it doesn't, you don't vote, and it's disqualified -- removed from your record.

Also, it'd be pretty disheartening for voters to see 30 photos (that they'd spent the time voting and commenting on) disqualified the night of challenge changeover because the photographers were too lazy to give their own feedback (or in the case above, intentionally doing it).

We really felt the advance-requirement was the best way to go. The best advice I can offer is writing comments on 25%. If you've got any other thoughts / ideas, let me know.

Could the requirement be that you have to vote on 95%/25% comments on the last challenge you submitted to? So people like Karen, who weren't that excited about the fear challenge, or people who go away on vacation for a week, wouldn't have to sit one out again just so that they could vote on it?

We will monitor this, and it'll be easy to do with the help of our users. I'll have to write a new rule for it.

What's to stop him from voting 5s across the board in a challenge he has interest in? Unfortunately, nothing right now. On the up-note, his 5s across the board will affect everyone equally. This might be something we would want to put into our vote monitoring system, though.

Drew,

I think the issue is:

If I choose not to submit a photo one week, do I have to meet the vote requirement for that week before I can submit to the next challenge? I think that if I chose to not participate in a challenge, I should possibly be able to submit to the next one without fulfilling the vote requirement for a challenge that I skipped...
