I am doing an essay on a specific photograph, but I need one that has sufficient information from academic resources. The essay has to be focused on one particular image but can be compared to other images by the same artist or to ones within the same genre.

At this point I'm sort of deliberating between an Ansel Adams photo or the Migrant Mother by Dorothea Lange. I would really appreciate what you guys think

I'd probably try to find a photo that is a disputed Adams, since that should have all kinds of interesting documentation, and pretty much everyone is going to pick something from uncle Ansel or the Migrant mother.. :) Something different would be fun, and then you could finish with your own conclusion as to the authenticity of the photograph.

Then again, I think your choice would probably be easier...

I particularly like the work of Annie Leibovitz and there is much to choose from. I quite enjoy her alice in wonderland stuff.

Try something from Alfred Stieglitz; one of the most influential people in the history of photography, reams and reams has been written about him and his work, he was even more important as a champion of photography-as-art then as a photographer. Plus, Georgia O'Keefe was the love of his life, and theirs was a fascinating relationship. Fertile ground, indeed.

For something recent, the controversy surrounding Shelby Lee Adams' Appalachian Legacy would be interesting.

Ah, but you can't forget Capa's "The Falling Soldier."
