4.4 with 13 votes ...... I struggle to reconcile the reception my stuff gets in the SC with the scores I generally get in the mains. Not that I expect to win particularly cos there are loads of simply awsome photos in the mains that i can but only dream to aspire to .... But 4.x weep weep :-)

I've replaced a 4 (in negative) with another 4. I'm really on a role!

Really quiet in here...
10/06/2010 04:13:48 PM · #11
Kevin, it does seem so.

But I am going to be a little harsh (sorry).......I have been spending a while away and been busy........would have loved to enter this challenge, but life got in the way and I could not get time to get anywhere.
So I thought I would vote and comment, especially seeing I often like to photograph memorials (and often get canned here for them).......was thinking it would be a great place for ideas, and see what others were thinking............

With the exception of a couple of images, overall I have been disappointed with what has been submitted. Still plan on commenting, and will also go through the scores again, but it has come out as the lowest average score on a challenge for as long as I can remember (as I said, sorry..........but hope to comment many of them)....

I also noted a number of photos of the same subject, just a slightly different view.......enough to be surprising. Maybe this challenge was being used by a school, which also explains the quiet here.

But hey, will get to some commenting.......and sorry for the slightly harsh words, but was looking forward this evening to seeing some great images.............

I didn't expect great images from this challenge. I tried as hard as I could to get ideas for this. We have a couple of monuments around here, but no matter how hard I looked at them, I couldn't make them interesting. Everything turned out to be a snapshot of a monument. I figured that others were probably having the same difficulty. I did searches online for ideas, and most of those were dull, as well, unless it was a particularly fascinating monument.

After the challenge is over, I wish people would post interesting pictures of monuments, because I was at such a loss with this one. I'm sure I'm missing something that I could have done, I just don't know what.

I started this morning with a 4.7 and am now up to a 5.28!! Amazing climb!!

@Wendy - I knew exactly what I wanted to shoot but when I started processing, I found it to be extremely difficult to make my image interesting with basic editing! I shot it from many angles and decided on my entry after editing and re-editing and then finally submitting an ok image. I knew I would get comments regarding a particular issue I had while shooting, but I've only had one person comment about it (so far). I know if this had been an advanced challenge, I would have had a really dynamic image!

Very grateful to the recent voters who've been bumping me up. May you all vote as happily in all challenges :)

I had the same trouble with basic editing and trying to make the shot interesting as opposed to a snapshot. I'm sure I raised a few eyebrows as I laid down flat on the ground trying to peer through the viewfinder to compose an unusual angle.

Sadly my problem has been pointed out...but that's also a good thing. I knew it was an issue after processing but decided to go with it anyway. Everything else was good and I should have taken the time to fix it but...

Kai, thanks for the very in-depth comment/critique. Best I have had in a long time!!

Roseann, I am pretty sure I know which image is yours and will leave a comment.

i'll agree, it was difficult to capture an intriguing image of a monument without it ending up looking like a snapshot. i do like how mine turned out and am really disappointed in how it's doing.

yep, the general crop of images is fairly ordinary ... I wish some folks would tell me why mine is only 4.x ing - it ain't massively special but I honestly think this time round it should have held itself against the comp better than it has so far ... can't help thinking that folks are taking "basic editing" to mean 'out of camera' rather than, as I interpret it, any treatment should be applied evenly to the whole image.

Don't agree, monuments lend a lot of creative manouvre so long as one is content with compositions of part of the monuments rather than an image of the entire thing ... for which I agree full monumental shots do end up snapshoting ...

... which is possibly why mine is failing rather - since it was absolutey chucking it down with rain at the time severly minimizing my ability to compose imaginatevely ... forget the rule of thirds etc the first line of compositional defence is the question 'am I severly restricted in how I can compose the image' if yes then it'll bomb :-)

that's wherein the difficulty lies. shooting a section of a monument is much more limiting than of another subject that's more recognizable. it's easy to end up with something that no one would relate as a monument. it can obviously be done of course which is where, like you said, imagination comes in, but it is more difficult.

100-vote checkin. This challenge reached 100 votes far quicker than the free-study.

Comments were interesting - some liked an aspect of the picture, some hated that exact same aspect :)

Just finished voting - possibly the dullest set of photos on here for some time.

I hope I'm not out of line in making this post. I didn't enter this challenge, but I read this thread with interest. When this challenge was announced, LadyK's photo came to mind. But I didn't have time to seek out a memorial or monument for such a great shot. Also, LadyK's shot was a candid, being in the right place at the right time, with a great emotional story behind it. What hits the mark for me is the human element, the reason we have memorials/monuments. My 2cents anyways. So I agree with the above thoughts... a difficult challenge to pull off well...
