Oh well, I thought I'd done really well with the photo I submitted to the "Body Parts" challenge, but my score is at 5. I know it's partly a focus issue, because I was taking the photo of myself in a mirror and it was awkward to use the camera like that, AND I did a 2 pixel gaussian blur on the photo to soften the skin tones a bit... and I liked it that way. Unfortunately no one else does. But also I think it's just too weird for most people. I don't think I'll ever escape my tendency to be weird just by having a better camera :P.
Sorry to talk about my photo in the forums, but this is just a Moanday thing (even though it's Tuesday here).

I'm feeling the same way about the focus issue. I chose mine cause it actually looked better. |

My body parts submission is not doing as well as I had hoped. Most people don't get it. There's always next week.

lisae: I think I feel the same way you do. I got 8th place in the Occupation challange, I submitted what I think is a really neat looking photo for the Four challange, but it's only scoring a 5.5 :( What bugs me is I really can't see what's wrong with it... it emphasises composition and lines more than lighting and little details, but I think it's a cool picture anyway... I really thought it was going to score better.
But that's okay, because I really think my photo for Travel is going to do well ;)

Lots of people never see 5.5 on a shot, so I think that's pretty good. I would be honored if the lowest I got was a 5.5. I got my new camera now though (thanks to a great friend), so watch out! hahaha

In the Four challenge I started at 5.9 with 30 voters (monday 6AM US time) and was at 5.4 monday midday with 60 voters and have been wondering if there is something like a 'europpean' sensitivity (+ australian friends and others ;-) ) and then a US one for some shots. My guess was that the first vote were more european. not sure.
Some other week I am pretty steady but this week it was pretty obvious !
Hou la la ... Heather is going to kick some ass with her new cam :)))))
Merry Chrismas to all european people from a french frog (and to lisa as well ;-) )

A score in the 5s is pretty low for the members challenge though. The voting there is far higher than the open challenge. My score has climbed a little to 5.25, but I still feel about the same way I did about a score in the 4s for the challenges on the old site. Oh well, I know what I did wrong. Next time I'll make sure I focus properly and I definitely WON'T gaussian blur anything on purpose. It makes such a difference when people can tell your camera is good and you're aiming for a high standard.

looks like i'm headed for another 'bottom 3' finish with my 4.8 (so far, and dropping)

i don't - i'm looking forward to the critique to see if there's any insight on why my shot didn't get at least that "pretty low" 5

Yahoo I'm soaring for the barrel bottom too! That seems to be my natural niche for personal fotog. But I really enjoy and admire those less than 5 score images anyways on the whole. Because they have less of a tendency for mass appeal. I am (jealously) bashing those slick technical graphic marvels that will WOW general John Public. As opposed to raw unadulterated heart speaks that may be a fuzzy subtle mess on the outside but grow on you after a while. I like DPC because there not the pressures of $$$ or glory. Just amateurs in the true sense who wallow addictively in the art/craft for the pleasure/reward of speaking visually something from inside themselves. I would rather have an inner chord touched by a score "3" image from Konador than selling a chunk of self in the name of popularity. I feel miffed too from low scores. But I just reconcile that as a learning experience and try to stay true to myself even if I never get a "7" on DPC. I plead with you to develop your individual mind-eye song and reflect life as you experience it. You make the world a far far richer place because of who you are. And I value that more than any measure (or score at DPC). Sorry for the rambling rant on a touchy subject. |

I'm proud of my Body Parts submission and it is doing pretty good but my picture for Four is doing lousy, I'd take that one back if I could. |

I can relate, having just gotten my first 6+ score in over 30 challenges!
But I'm with Bullwinkle on this -- I'm more interested in meaningful photos than technically perfect ones. Those that can combine the two are often best...although there are some (esp. photojournalistic) where I feel technical "perfection" might actually detract from the emotional impact, kind of like over-produced music...
Well, my "Four" photo is back in the 4's, although since I don't have 4 comments yet I'm not completely sure why...maybe I'll just 4get about it 4 today.
I am surprised that, with all the shots of playing cards, there wasn't a "four-flusher" among them. Can I enter a late submission? I really did think of it during the challenge period! |

I quizzed 7 folks as to if they knew what a 'four-flusher' was... I got 6 "no idea" answers and nixed the idea :)

One of the great things about an international site like this is the chance to learn/teach new things. Also, I think if most people saw the cards they'd figure it out (except maybe those who refuse to read the titles). |

still doesn't answer the question... and I still have never heard of a four-flusher and I'm obviously not smart enough to figure it out.

Hey mygyl I think a four flusher is a poker term. Example" in five card stud with 4 hearts(flush) showing you would bet on the hand and hopefully bluff the other players out of betting.

It is indeed a poker term :) It refers to a person with 4 cards of 1 suit and 1 card that is a different suit but the same color (4 hearts and a diamond) and trys to lay them on the table in such a way that it looks like a flush.
DISCLAIMER : Don't try this at home kids! It can get you shot :)

By extension it also refers to anyone who tries to gain material advantage by way of deceit or misrepresentation (see, ENRON) |

The motion challenge was my first. Got a 6.55 and snagged 8th. This week I am in both challenges. One image (body parts) is at 5.85 and my Four is scoring at around 5.2.
I like my four shot better than my motion shot. That is all that matters to me. To get a 5 it could be that someone gave it a 1 and another gave it a 9. That means that the one person liked it and the other didn't. I can live with that.
Moral? If you like it, who cares?

Body parts-5.7. Seeems like many of us are suffering from lower scores on this members challenge, what happened to the xmas spirit? I really liked my shot, but I have a feeling a lot of people don't understand it. Unfortunately there will be no critique club this week, but I would like some feedback after the challenge....
