October would be a great month for the next Master's Free Study! Fall/Spring for everybody. The last one was such a great batch of pictures to go over.

Yeah, make it one where 30 ribbons are required

;-P

Well at least double figures surely . .

Make it a 'Grand Masters' Challenge :- )

Of course if they did that then everyone in the category would have to enter to make it worhtwhile . .

This is all grand and glorious - but I would love to see a challenge for only brown ribbon winners or those to whom haven't won a ribbon yet. : )

yaay! the challenge would be to score a brown ribbon among all the brown ribboners!

Hmmm... probably too much work for Langdon

but...

Open challenge:

Challenge #1 -- open to anyone without a ribbon, any subject, basic editing
Challenge #2 -- open to anyone with a ribbon, any subject, basic editing

You can't choose which one to enter, you have to enter the appropriate one.

Great idea! Its pretty much win win
The ribbon winner of the Masters challenge is doubly honored for winning over fierce competition
The ribbon winner of the other challenge, finally wins a ribbon!

This has been considered before -- that ribbon is devalued compared to all the other ribbons because the competition wasn't open to everyone, specifically those who might well have been in contention. It's also why we don't run challenges just for our younger members -- everybody competing equally and anonymously seems to me to be a core principle of the site which we should try to avoid eroding.

I suppose some could think that it is devalued.
Personally, I would just be thrilled to finally have won something, and I think many others would feel the same.

Buuuut... Think about this from the other side of the fence... If you had won a ribbon or two already and then someone else was awarded an "easier" ribbon, wouldn't you feel like it was somehow a bit unfair?

Both sides are quite easy to understand, but I suspect that we'll never see this challenge...

I don't think it's devalued -- it's a ribbon for a certain challenge. I don't consider a product challenge more or less than a wildlife challenge (well, maybe I do :)

It's a ribbon one for a specific set of rules. That's it.

The problem is that it's a ribbon for a certain challenge for certain people, and the issue at hand is that the "good" players are excluded from competing.. But hell, look at my profile, you know I'd be all over that "devalued" ribbon too... I can just easily understand why some would not feel this is fair..

Instead of Blue Red & Yellow Ribbons, they could be awarded a Blue Unicorn, Red Rainbow, and Yellow Snowflake; each with an asterisk leading to a footnote at the bottom of the page.

I was waiting for someone to propose the "Roger Maris" solution ... ;-)

Back to the point at hand:

Master's free study:

I'd love to see one. Never seen one before -- would be cool!

Instead of ribbons, consider making it open to anyone with a lifetime DPC average above some threshold (e.g. 6.0) -- FWIW the Top-50 cutoff is currently at 6.27 ...

But that punishes those who enjoy entering the occasional crappy and/or controversial shot for kicks.

I like that, it would narrow the field!

Average doesn't mean quite as much, however. Many of those people only enter challenges in which they'll score well. Others enter almost everything, and have a lower average because of it.

7 out of the top 20 ribbon winners this year have averages lower than 6.0.

It sounds like the original idea worked just fine. Let's make it simple for Langdon -- why change something that works?

Lifetime scoring average isn't a very good criterion for a DPC Master. It kind of discriminates against practically everyone who plays the game week-in-and-week-out without respite, in favor of those who pick and choose their challenges with regards to how well they can score.
