I started voting, but stopped before 20% so the scrubbers will erase my votes.
Sorry, but Min Ed rules really hurt this challenge, badly and I was voting LOW. Being an ex-journalist, AE would have been much more appropriate.
So, some of you can expect a jump at rollover.

I was mostly dissappointed in these entries. Found a few during voting that were excellent but, for me at least, most very poor attempts. I only gave out 13 votes of a 7 or higher. Of course judging by my score I guess the same could be said of my entry. |

My first few votes that I got were 3's and 4's, which killed me because I thought I had a really good out of camera shot that met the challenge, I am much happier with the score now. I almost forgot how harsh this site can be on scores, I think thats why I stayed away for so long. Its good to be back, trying to have thicker skin.

Not a great bunch of entries i thought but i am quite aware that the challenge topic is probably one of the very hardest. I'm not sure that the minimal rules really harmed it that much just the week time limit. Well done to those that entered though. I was looking forward to it but was so taken with a Nixter-esqe image i went with that instead. I am pretty sure that due to timing and location i would not have come up with anything worth entering myself though. |

I entered this challenge (I had a fairly good Nixter image but thought I might do better in this challenge). I had a 6.12 last night and am now sitting at a 5.8387. I'm happy - it's one of the best minimal editing shots I've taken.

I chose to enter the Nixter challenge, but I did some voting on all 3 new challenges after rollover. I tried to evaluate them more on how well they would have suited a magazine or newspaper article on the subject than on the usual DPC issue wow-factor. There were a couple that left me scratching my head. To some extent, this challenge was a matter of being in the right place at the right time.

| It does look like some are shoehorns but all in all not too bad for the minimal editing. I think some are scared away by it. I had a lot of fun with my shot. I changed the white balance and had a polarizer filter on my lens trying to get the right tone for the image. |

And as a current working Press photographer(and the person who suggested Min. Editing) I appreciate what it takes to get it right in the camera and not lean on PS to get it right. I didn't enter because I worked 75 hours last week and it just fell off my radar, however I will vote and comment on them all this week.

As a working Press Photographer you should realize that we are expected to shoot for a crop of which we don't often know the dimensions. Therefore lose in-camera cropping is the norm, as is constantly flipping from portrait to landscape.
Works great in real life. You can count on the layout team to crop the final. Min. Ed. doesn't allow that basic luxury.
You can spit that get it right in-camera BS all you want, but it's very inconsistent with real world photojournalism.

Go MattO!! I agree with you and really made an effort to enter this challenge. I'm sitting at a 5.95, which is a PB for me with regards to minimal editing. : )

It was the lesser of two evils, Leroy. Apart from the "no crop, no rotate" aspect of it, minimal editing is very consistent with the photojournalistic world. Far more so than even basic editing, which permits liberties with the image no working photojournalist could afford to indulge in.

Not really. In PJ, this rule from AE is the one Journalism professors harp on over and over again. "You may not use ANY editing tool to move, remove or duplicate any element of your photograph that would change a typical viewer’s description of the photograph (aside from color or crop), even if the tool is otherwise legal, and regardless of whether you intended the change when the photograph was taken.
THAT is consistent with real world PJ work. Global editing, even spot removal, is very consistent with how real photo editors get the final image out.
I've been on both sides of the photo desk, even when I had to do most of the work in an actual darkroom.
I'm sorry and MattO is a good photographer, but I can not agree with him on this.
