This change requires no coding, just a rule change. Allow for people on the forums to call out a photo during a challenge, if it's a blatant copy of another photo. I have no problem with allowing this sort of plagiarism for the sake of learning technique, but voters should be aware of it.

No coding change, no extra work for SC. Allow DPC to police itself. All people have to do is post the photos that are being ripped off. Come to think of it, maybe we're allowed to do that anyway. Food for thought.

Getting tired of seeing wine glasses? You must be wearing out your 1 key.

Gets in to a lot of gray areas, I think. Besides, there has never been any rule against copying someone elses idea.

OK. Can we also call out the insincere flattery?

Oh WTF?? I suggested this EXACT same idea a year ago. :P

Hmmm... In some ways I agree whole heartedly. However-- this would really suck for all of us wildlife photographers. My portrait of a cardinal probably looks exactly like another portrait of a cardinal.

Let me clarify so I don't get in trouble, YOU, Don, are a fine, talented sincere person.

THIS, however, is a stupid idea. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Perhaps you need to be more clear here, because as it reads, it would seem that Irene would lay claim to water drops, Roz to bugs and so on.

Certainly one of those gray areas.

Many of us have not been on the site long enough to even know that someone tried to copy another photo and to tell the truth....I don't care! If the image is well done and appeals to the voters, it will get the score it deserves by majority vote. It's ironic that currently there is a thread about "The final image matters most" - and I agree. :-)

I myself may want to try to somewhat copy an image as a learning experience and wouldn't want to be vilified for my efforts!

This site is awash with copies, I've done it myself, I'm sure many others have, it's an excellent way of learning, trying to figure out and recreate the conditions that someone more talented / more experienced did before you.

Why would you WANT to call them out, why would you want to change other peoples opinion of them? Isn't it enough that you don't like it for being a copy without biasing others too?

I have to wonder about the reasoning behind this suggestion.

I don't think we should be allowed to say anything about a particular entry during voting, positive or negative.

Is there an image that's bothering you right now, Don?

What is that? A trick?

How do you copy an entry in a competition if you can't see other entries until after the submission period is over?

" Challenge Details: Pay homage to an excellent member of DPChallenge (Nixter) who has a very distinct style. Mimic his style when creating or editing your entry. "

Just remember, Don't copy.

Amazing that it doesn't even occur to some people that originality might be valued by some voters.

I'm thinking of just starting a thread called "Brilliant Photos That Inspired Us" and putting photos there that are exactly like photos currently in the challenge. People who think originality is worthless can ignore the thread.

i really dont care either way. but im leaning towards the "sincerest form of flattery."

i think its great if someone tries to redo a photo of yours becuase they admire it so much.

Although if someone does coppie because they couldnt think of anything else to do... then that is being lazy and is messed up...

The idea is good, but the spirit is wrong IMHO.

I'm still trying to figure this out. Are you talking about copying other photos on DPC alone? Or is it copying any photo anywhere?

Just curious on the scope.

It's patently ridiculous to even entertain the idea that any original ideas are going to surface. Someone's done it before, somewhere, some time. Yeah.......blatant plaigarism isn't cool, but seriously? You have to know what you're suggesting won't work. If you don't emulate people whom you admire, and learn how and why they do what they do, how can you expect to develop your own style once you understand how those before you did it?

Thank you. My thoughts exactly.

Dunno, makes me see red... ;-)

Seriously, "calling out blatant copies" is one of the worst ideas I've seen proposed in a long while, however well intentioned.

Jeb, did you not read where I said it was okay as a learning tool? I'm sorry that you think originality is impossible. I see it all the time, and it's beautiful.

Don.....the whole of photography in the first place is capturing something that already is......yeah, you can put your own spin on it, but you're reproducing something's existence. How is that original?

I think its another idea to drive members to bicker and fight... and eventually leave.
