I need to get a better flash.....

The one I have isnt horrible... just not the best in the whole world.... I knew that when I bought it.....

This is what I have: QUANTARAY QDC 900WA Digital Zoom Flash

So when I am looking for a new flash... what do I look for.....

I havent decided on my budget yet - depends on the differences etc.

My camera is the Canon Rebel XS 1000D

Thanks!

eta: I guess the question I should have asked is why aren't you happy with your current flash?

I needed my first flash last week and decided to buy a Canon 430EX II along with a TTL cord to use with my XS. I am very happy with it. But it is my first experience with a flash. And now with my new 7D, I don't even need the TTL cord! (haven't had a chance to play with it wirelessly yet though)

Its not very reliable. It sometimes doesnt fire.

I found my Canon 430ex on amazon for $165. That was a really good deal, but you can regularly find used ones for about $200.

aaah...now there might be a couple of things going on there. One is that if its being fired full power it needs time to recycle (there might be a light to indicate that its ready to fire). The other possibility is if its over heating. The flash won't fire as a safety precaution in that case.

I guess the other possibility is its just borked. :(

I agree with the notion of getting a Canon flash as it will allow you to use the gear you have to shoot wirelessly.

Im assuming that one would work well with my set up too?

It will work just fine with all Canon DSLR's. I bought it when I was using a Rebel XT and have also used it on a 20D and now the 50D.

I've been reading up on some of the Yongnuo strobes as a cheap second unit for Ellen's camera and as an additional off camera unit, with more control than my bargain bin Vivitar's have. Many of them are manual only, and for an on camera flash for her, I'd like something that supports TTL.

I just want something so that when I am doing things indoors (like at family gatherings) or outdoors in shady areas I have that extra push of lighting I have several diffusers of several different types (actually have a set for the 430 I got at a gargage sell for 2.00 I was going to ebay but might hang on to now LOL) and that I can rotate to bounce off of so that the light doesnt have to be direct.

Thats about all I know about flashes... no idea what any of the numbers, settings, etc means LOL.... My husband said to set my budget at $200.00 so the 430 would be right up my alley.

Sounds like the 430ex is the ticket then. It's reliable and fits the budget. I did see some used ones listed on Amazon earlier today for $200 + shipping.
