Someone recently mentioned the desire for people to post details of how they lit their entires. Since the B/W sitll life challenge involved some work with lighting for most of us, I thought this would be a good opportunity to do a thread with details.

Here's mine:

Presently, my lighting gear is composed mostly of some bargain bin flashes, with inexpensive umbrellas and reflectors.

I wanted the primary lighting to be coming from the right, but still needed a bit of fill on the left, otherwise the shadows would be too deep and not show any detail at all. Initially, I tried it with just the strobes on the right and reflector on the left, but had to add another strobe for some more fill. Here's what I ended up with:

-2 Vivitar 2800's to the right, behind a shoot-through umbrella.
-Handheld Vivitar 2800, with a small softbox on it, pointing at a 32" reflector on the left.
-Optical peanut triggers on all the 2800's.
-Canon 430ex on the hotshoe, snooted, pointed to the right, and set to the lowest power. Just enough to trigger the optical slaves, but not enough to affect the image.
-Manual mode exposure, since optical slaves are not exactly TTL-aware devices. It usually takes me a handful of test shots to get the exposure correct.

I used ambient afternoon light from a window on the left & slightly behind my arrangement.

Used a light tent in the backyard on a sunny day. The backdrop is a piece of cloth from a fabric store draped over some books.

One of the nicest comments I received in this challenge was that my shot looked as if it was natural light!! The light was actually a softbox bounced off of a large white reflector...and that's it!

Back lit with a candle below the table and painted for about 5 seconds per pear.

Here is a color version of the same setup.

Stripe of black cardboard hung behind table; two Profoto D1Air 500W with wide-angle reflectors on white seamless background; black styrofoam boards between flashes and glasses.

Three light setup taken in my small studio. I had a large white sheet hung camera left and I shot an AB400 with a reflector umbrella through the sheet to make a nice diffused fill light. I then bounced my other AB400 off the ceiling on the other side to add fill from above and to the right. Finally I put a DIY paper snoot on my new SB600 and used it as a spotlight to highlight the center of the composition and create a natural lighting vignette. The flash was above and pointing down at the composition, it was located approx. 4 feet up.
