I'm curious at how good people would be working with the image below. Personally, I prefer a manual blending rather than using Photomatix or other programs and I've wondered if it's just because I'm no good at using the other programs. I figured it would be nice to compare my attempt with someone who knows what they are doing.

So give it your best shot at show me how bad I am. If you PM me your email, I'll send you a link to download 6 20MB RAW exposures (from -3 to +2). You can use as many or as few as you want, and then you can post your work and we can compare. I'm going to work the scene up manually (ie. by blending exposures in CS5 with masks). It would be nice for everybody to compare notes.

The scene:

If I weren't traveling right now and on netbook, I'd play. If this thread is still running in a couple of days, I'll give it a shot. I'll send you my e-mail

Hmm, slight snag. The usual way I send large files via email (yousendit.com) has a 100MB limit for free. The zip of the 6 files is 178MB (which is sorta funny since the total of six 20MB files should be 120MB, weird). Anybody have any other ideas for how I can get you the files?
08/20/2010 12:14:46 AM · #6
Ya, that's weird. The RAW files themselves are 29-31 MB. Why are they bigger than 20?

I'm going to try sending them 3 at a time.
08/20/2010 12:18:14 AM · #8
That might be working. Someone let me know if you get the email.

I've got a pro yousendit account. I'll distribute them if you'd like.
ETA: send the multiple file upload to my dropbox.

I think you can just click this link and it should work? I haven't used the dropbox feature much... https://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=dropbox&dropbox=DerekGarfield545396

Hehe. But how do I get it to you? :)
08/20/2010 12:45:41 AM · #11
you can email them to me one at a time and I'll host them, if you want.
08/20/2010 12:46:24 AM · #12
Well, I think I may have sent them out, but I need someone to tell me if they got my email with the link.

PhotomatixPro on all 6 originals, Topaz Detail, and a little Topaz Simplify for web viewing. You wouldn't want the simplify for printing, but it cleans up details for web viewing nicely IMO.

Be sure to click on "View Full Sized Image", this is a 5.8 megabyte file that DPC has made an 800-pixel preview of, and the preview looks fuzzy.

I can't open the 5DII RAWs in CS3, so I just went blind and merged all 6 in Photomatix. I have no idea if I'd be better off with fewer originals until I get around to converting the CR2's to NEF's, which I can do but takes time.

On mine? Click on thumbnail, scroll down a bit, click on "View Full Size Image"...

On Doc's? He doesn't have one posted. PM him for link to a hosting site if you want, but his full-size originals are 5DmkII CR2 RAW files and you won't be able to open them with CS2.
