Minimal Editing is intended as a “straight from the camera” test of skill, and allows only the adjustments essential to convert your original image into a form acceptable for submission on DPChallenge. Most editing tools are not permitted under these rules. Restrictions on post-processing apply to ALL edits performed after the image is captured, whether on a computer or with in-camera tools.

What applications should be used , for example for sharpen?
One of the most simple applications I know , FastStone Viewer, has a customizable sharpen level and I am not sure that this is legal.

This is a good question. I was assuming that I could sharpen in Apple's Preview, just move the slider a bit - is that a customisation...? The degree to which we sharpen? All of the sharpening tools I have allow for selection of radius and intensity...

This will be my first minimal edit so some advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

I know this sounds silly....but perhaps actually reading the rules may help out with the question:

Minimal Editing Rules

You may:

* sharpen your entry using your editing software’s “sharpen” or equivalent option. The use of customizable sharpening tools, such as Unsharp Mask, is not allowed.

I was planning just to stick to this rule: You may - use any feature of your camera while photographing your entry, with the exception of combining multiple captures in-camera. and just do everything in camera, sharpening, black & white if i choose to, etc. Of course, many digital cameras may not have the ability to do this .

This is my dilemma: does the variable sharpening level the Fastone Viewer a "customizable" sharpening tool and thus illegal for this kind of challenge?

i would think that if you have the ability to adjust the amount of sharpening, radius and threshold, its illegal. if you can hit a button called "sharpen" and have no control over the output, its legal.

OK , and what are those applications that have only one button called "sharpen" with no control over the output?

i know that photoshop (multiple versions) has a "sharpen" only button as well as customizable sharpening tools.

Thank you , I will try it, although , just by simple opening the image with Photoshop I feel guilty of breaking the rules in a "minimal editing" challenge.

You will need to open Photoshop to resize your image for the challenge. Therefore...opening PS for a minimal editing entry should not make you feel guilty. You need to resize purely to make the image web friendly.

im thinking thats just the "smart sharpen". here is what photoshop says:

Sharpen filters - The Sharpen filters focus blurred images by increasing the contrast of adjacent pixels.

Sharpen and Sharpen More - Focus a selection and improve its clarity. The Sharpen More filter applies a stronger sharpening effect than does the Sharpen filter.

Sharpen Edges and Unsharp Mask - Find the areas in the image where significant color changes occur and sharpen them. The Sharpen Edges filter sharpens only edges while preserving the overall smoothness of the image. Use this filter to sharpen edges without specifying an amount. For professional color correction, use the Unsharp Mask filter to adjust the contrast of edge detail and produce a lighter and darker line on each side of the edge. This process emphasizes the edge and creates the illusion of a sharper image.

Smart Sharpen Sharpens an image by letting you set the sharpening algorithm or control the amount of sharpening that occurs in shadows and highlights. See Sharpen using Smart Sharpen.

I was aware of the rule - it just isn't clear. Using Aperture for example, the only global sharpening tool is slider based that has as its defaults: Intensity 0.5, Radius 1.0... In which case, whether I move the slider or not, it IS customisable. In Preview, the only way to apply sharpening is to move the slider from the mid position. Using default settings is not the same as not using customisable tools.

What does "Use a RAW original or RAW conversion software" mean?
Must we take the shot in jpeg?

You can shoot with RAW+, but use only the jpeg for the submission. In other words, don't process the RAW for the challenge.

Be careful with sharpening. ...

I don't even know how well my camera takes JPG images since I never use JPG anymore... UGH :)

I'm nervous about entering these challenges! I'll definitely do something stupid and get DQ'd.

IrfanView is an excellent free (Windows-based) viewer/editor which can resize and sharpen within the Minimal editing rules.
08/04/2010 11:11:08 AM · #20
and remember...NO cropping. In fact...maybe read and reread the YOU MAY NOT section a couple of times and let that sink in :)

I haven't shot anything for this yet but I can tell you what my editing will be.

Resize. One pass of sharpen. If I feel extra motivated I might desaturate the image too but that might be pushing it.

That's it.

My workflow will involve using the reset button a lot. And topaz. Then reset. Maybe some selective desaturation with a bit of reset. And a tad of HDR, with a bit of reset too.
I'll probably have 'how I would have done this' as a comment after.

EVERYone gets DQ'd at some point. Check out the submission history of ANYONE on this site. So stop stressing. You'd be in good company :-)

But I don't wanna. Maybe I'd better be safe and take a shot of something completely mundane like... a cup.

Just take a photo and do nothing to it. The no-crop is the main one for me... but oh well.

I will...

...use a non-DSLR
...take as good a photo as I can.
...upload directly to the site.

Why non-DSLR?
