I was wondering if anyone would be interested in a side challenge for shooting shots through unconventional (not commercially manufactured) filters. Stuff like cellophane, vaseline smeared glass, textured glass, plastic, prisms etc. etc. Be inventive or try stuff you've seen. Even proper lenses would be okay if they don't match your camera. The aim would be to get results that are not like straight and perfect photography, but more whimsical.

Oh, goodie! Some interest already.

I think this should start August 1

No rules other than staying with the spirit of the side challenge and having fun.

I do that sort of stuff too. The SC would give me a good excuse to use this thing and some of my other things that I have found or purchased to do that sort of experimentation.

I thought about using it for the "Shallow DOF" challenge. Then I thought " well, portraits of pretty models, or gritty guys will probably score best in this one" so I didn't.

I've used these before -- usually sold in a 10-12 unit assortment pack as party favors:

"Straight" shot: Through faceted lens:

I've also used a piece of "screened" film (pattern of dots or lines) to create a "star filter" effect:

I'll bite. Just to let you know, I'm not a "post-a-day"er. This was the first month I ever entered side challenges, and I might have entered 5 or 10 shots. But, I do enjoy learning and the no rules takes a lot of the pressure off.

I think it may be fun!

Does it need to fit on the end of the lens or can it be separate?? I have a piece of ice block glass that totally warps whatever I put behind it. I'd love to be able to use it.

Smeared vaseline

I may join for a month of vaseline. Need to find my slimey filter.

Does it have to be digital? I have more cigar box/Fresnel magnifier images to share.

I don't see any need to limit this to digital. The more variety the better.

I'll see what I can offer. Here is one from my portfolio actually

Cellophane wrapper from a muffin held on to the lens with an elastic.

I'll put up an image thread on Sunday, August 1. As I live in Australia that will be a few hours ahead of most of you.

Let's keep it G-rated, Ben.

I'm not looking to enter a side challenge, but wanted to share this because it fits in here so very, VERY well.

This filter was made from welder's glass, cut to fit the Cokin holder.

It took a 45 second exposure, but during that exposure there was a car driving along the road, and you don't see even a hint of that car!! Perfect for disappearing pesky tourists!

This one is straight from the camera:

This one after a few tweaks in Photoshop:

And in black and white it looks quite good, don't ya think?

That is really cool, Beetle. My son has a welder's mask hanging in our garage. Maybe I can sit a camera within it.
