While looking at some of the worst possible comments around on DPC, I found this user:
wasifs
It seems that they have managed to leave 72 comments without making a single vote in any challenge. Then I found that you can indeed click on the comment note, and leave one without voting.
Doesn't that defeat the purpose of DPC? |

Judging by the comment he left on my choices photo, "uh, NO", I'm guessing he doesn't understand that the main purpose of this site is to improve our photography. He sees the challenge as an ends not a means to that goal.
Also...he has not participated in any challenges.

I found that user by viewing your photo, BTW! I know, he/she left a comment on my photo, but I didn't view his/her profile until I saw "Oh,No" on yours.
I laughed at the comment!

Well, every once in a while there is a suggestion that users should be forced to leave a comment in order to vote (at least to vote with a score at or below 3).
If I had to choose between getting just a comment or just a vote, I'd take the comment. A vote just tells you some arbitrary measure of how much some anonymous person liked or disliked your photo. A comment gives you something to go on so you know what to improve (or keep doing). Plus, since there's a name attached, you can decide how much weight you're going to give to it.
It occurs to me that most of these suggestions boil down to "Force users to not be morons when voting or commenting." Unfortunately, in any group there will always be a few jerks, idiots, and trolls looking to amuse themselves or boost their egos with wacky voting and comments. Fortunately, I've found that the vast majority of here at DPC are quite thoughtful and take a keen interest in voting their concience and leaving helpful comments. I figure that the small minority who don't fit that description just get lost in the noise. All the better if they identify themselves by commenting - makes it that much easier to ignore them! |

| He lists his e-mail addy so it is probably not just someone's ghost account. About a third of his comments have been marked helpful, that's not too unusual. Probably just hanging around for a while, easing his way into the community, getting a "lay of the land" before he jumps in. Comments have a bit of a smart-alecky tone to them. He knows what he doesn't like. Maybe you might not be to pleased if this commenter were forced to vote. Hope he moves beyond this stage and enters some challenges. |

| If you leave comments after the challenge has ended you have a comment without a vote. And if you vote on less than 20% your votes go away but your comments stay. Commenting without voting isn't a big problem. |

| check the "helpful" comments he made in his profile, some of them are "boring", "bad photo", "no", "one for terrible composition and subject" |

the people who leave smart-alecky comments tend to stop after they have entered some challenges and realized they arent the all knowing person they thought they were |

I just realized that it was you, Jbeazel, that were suggesting that the votes are more important than the comments. Somehow, I read your post to mean that Wasif suggested the notion of forcing a commenter to vote.
I would suggest to you that you reconsider the purpose of the site. The voting part is fun and helps motivate us to try harder but you should not look at 'meeting the challenge' as the sole purpose of DPC. The voting is a means to an end, not the end itself. |

Sorry, but that's a pretty silly suggestion.
Quite often I want to comment on images but don't want to vote because I don't think it's fair to only vote on some.
This is yet another idea that DISCOURAGES people from leaving comments. |
