If someone wanted to create an app that gave your current score on a challenge, would they need administrator access to this site or could it be done as an outsider?

I have a friend who has been testing the Android App Creator for Google. This app will be released for free in a few weeks.

We want to work on the app mentioned above that will also have the math done for you to give you the score of your last vote (or avg of last vote(s)) depending on when you run the app.

It's really unsafe to give admin access to an app. You can't create it this way.
Just use the login form to get the cookie, download the index.php and parse this file to find the scores of the current challenges. Not so hard to do ;)

The short answer is "probably not." The only trick would be getting a refreshed home page with the desired user's log-in credentials. You can then scrape the score off the page.
The longer answer is, you want to carefully read the site terms of service to make sure yoiu are not violating them. I'd also bounce the idea off of Langdon (submit a ticket under Help>Contact Us, choose "Administrative Inquiry" category). It seems to me like such an app could be a positive thing, generating additional interest in the site, something we sorely need. The question is whether it would impose an undue load on the site. That is something that only Langdon can answer.

I think it'd be cool if the site had an API that was accessible via some validated token. They could then control who had access to the data, and we could write interfaces to it all day long. It'd be great for them -- they'd have to simply take advantage of others' willingness to do this kind of work, and members could have phone apps, widgets, and any number of useful tools at their disposal.

Yep, that would come under the heading of "good business."

its hard for me to imagine why they have not promoted the idea themselves. if you have a website, you want hits. you want multiple ways for people to get there. thats why more and more sites are having these apps for phones. pandora, wordpress, facebook etc etc. it just makes sense.

I have been dying for someone to come up with a droid app for this site.

Wouldn't even have to be all that complicated. A couple of commands sent rest-style or something, which return pox or json or whatever. Boom. Web service we could make snazzy gizmos for that people will drool over.

stop!

I want to buy the rights of the application, and then i will ask, to who wants to use it, one cent per click ... I become rich in a couple of days with all these addicted!

;-)))

Seems that getting the score to report on an app would be the easy part...if the app can access the user info via app keyed username/password.

The "last score" calculation thing is just some basic math as we all know from the excel file.

This is very doable but I can't do it alone...I need my buddy. Also, we are Android men and would not be able to do much for the Iphone at first. However, after it is written for Android, I'm sure someone could do the same for the iphone.

If google's Android App Creator beta is what it's touted to be, you can probably make your own...if you can get into the beta. (still waiting for my invite)

Either way, +1 for wanting an app.

I've written a C program to basically do this for me and I mentioned in a thread the other day that I intend to make an android app... so stay tuned!
The program doesn't need access, so neither does the android app.

DPC should open up a public API for app creators.

Oh yeah. I forgot about this.

Well, since Langdon gave me permission to do the Windows challenge monitor (for link see signature) I wouldn't think there'd be much problem for me/someone else doing something similar for android/iphone.
I won't be able to do anything for like a month cause I'm going travelling. If there's nothing up when I get back I'll look into it.
