just out of curiosity, how do we know that it hasn't already been validated? (if I missed that part in the thread I apologize)

Unless you send SC or the photographer a message and ask (and providing they tell you), there is no way to know yet. The photographer will get an email telling him if it has been validated.

Seems to me that since it is still the Blue then it is validated. Been a week now. Give the guy a break.

I was just answering a question, nothing else.

You'd think so, but it took quite a bit longer for my last couple validations to come through, so... Who the heck knows? Still, as far as I'm concerned we have a winner until told otherwise so, yeah, it's valid :-)

So that's why my desk is such a mess, I thought I was just a slob! Turns out I just can't make a decision, I'm not sure but I think I fell better, maybe........

did I miss a rule change? I thought selectively applied textures were always legal in advanced.

I wouldn't think textures would be allowed -- doesn't that go against the multiple captures allowed as long as they're of the same image? That would be adding a different capture to the mix...?

That's my understanding, too: you can't combine files unless it's the same scene, and we've disqualified many entries for overlays in the past. Filters are allowed in Advanced, including Texturizer and artistic filters, but that's not the same as pasting one image over another. Filters manipulate the image itself (even if some use an image to map the effect), and yield a different result.

Presuming it does not add a new feature, correct?

From the advanced rules

"You may not use ANY editing technique to create new image area, objects or features (such as lens flare or motion) that didn’t already exist in your original capture(s)"

Well, yeah, but that's often misunderstood. A new feature isn't "anything that's new," but something added that appears to be part of the capture. For example, you could run a watercolor filter on your entry legally (and probably face the wrath of voters), but you can't add lens flare, motion blur, rays of sunlight, make a dead light bulb appear lit, use a flood filter to create a lake, or run a cloud filter on blank sky. See?

So could I have finished off my photo with a texture? It appears to be the same technique as he used.

Yep. Thanks, what about Erin's example below?

I've had stuff in validation for two weeks when times are tough for the SC.

Let's be patient folks.

There's time enough to crucify them (whichever decision they make!) after they make their decision. *grin*

Not if you pasted it in from another file. "You must create your entry from 1-10 captures of a single scene (defined as a scene whose composition/framing does not change)."

Okay - I think I get it. I could not have used an overlay - but I could have used the linen filter, etc and just erased it over the portion I didn't want it to give the background texture?

This would have been legal then? It is a canvas texture filter

If that's legal, as it sounds, then there's a tool I'll definitely be using in the future.

Me too! I had no idea - this is way cool.

Yes, in my opinion. It's worth sending a SC ticket for other opinions though... I'm not always in the majority! ;-)

I don't understand how that's not creating something new... there was no linen texture before the editing... how is that not a new "object or feature" -- I'd assume that it would have come under the new feature category.

In any case, I think I would prefer it come up in that category, as it seems a bit too far into the digital art realm to me...

So much for my wisdom. Karen, sorry if it sounded like I was gettng on you becasue that was not the case. I just thought it was likley through the mill by now and was addressing the whole thread. It has been awhile since I've had anything validated but when I have it normally went fairly quick.
