It absolutely did go downhill and acquire a nasty tone......you don't want to acknowledge it fine, but then don't be surprised when people don't stick around. The post below wasn't anything but out of line and prompted my wish that I'd never started the thread.

You guys want to talk about this despite a member of SC specifically telling you not to, that's up to you, but it's not on topic either. This thread was started out of genuine delight, and admiration for a nice image. Somehow, I always got the idea that this kind of discussion was something that was to be decided by SC. Report it and keep the rest of it to yourselves if you think there's an issue. If this guy sticks around after this, I'll be amazed.

I don't mind the over-done, anime-style eyes, but I am annoyed that that photog does not acknowledge any comments - complimentary or critical - as helpful. To me that is exceedingly rude.

@ kenskid...I have seen so many noobs lose ribbons because they violated very basic rules, ie submitting photos taken outside the submission date, etc. So I have stopped feeling sorry for them. If you're going to play here, learn the rules first, then submit! Ignorance is no excuse.

Yeah, well I see it in the reverse. People are afraid to give honest opinions about genuine questions of challenge entries, style, quality of work, both in the forums and in comments for fear of hurting somebody's feelings, or -- worse -- having the masses cry foul and run at them in an angry mob, as evidenced here.

Elect Slippeh Prime Dictator, and he will mandate a Holier-Than-Thou, Politically-Correct, Mob-Mentality parade every Sunday.

In Burlington? Fits right in. The parade can march right off the end of that half-finished pier in Spencer Smith.

Free study winner deservs no 10's.

A set up shot should have no flaws to rate a 10 . The model's hair should have been adjusted to not have stray hair on her forehead and over the beads. Of course this is just my honest opinion. Some may say it adds to the photo. :}

Much of it has to do with how stagnant and boring DPC has become. Right from up top, it feels like this place has become listless and useless. It doesn't surprise me that there's a bitter and angry mob mentality around. I don't condone it, but it doesn't surprise me in the slightest.

Not to purposely take away from the photo of the person the OP was writing about, but it's almost one of the most cliche examples of re-hashing on this website. Some exotic woman wrapped in scarves. Oh my, give the photographer a pulitzer. We've never seen THAT before.

So we can get mad all we want that people are bitter and cynical and all kinds of negative, but until this site undergoes some kind of massive paradigm change (that I honestly don't see happening. I think even the owner is bored with it) it's pretty much set in this rut for the rest of time.

My advice is to simply ignore the negativity and keep trying on a personal level to take what you can from it, and put what you can into it. Jeb, don't stop making posts like this because of that element that will always be there. If you do, they win. Not that you're probably serious anyway. We hear threats like that from you all the time, you schizo :D Keep on keepin' on.

Why are ya'll even arguing about this? It has yet to be proven that he did not follow the rules. He still is on the front page with the blue!
DP is no better than the rest of the world, you are innocent UNTIL proven guilty!!!!

Just remember in the past, if you say the wrong thing about the wrong persons picture, you get kicked off for some different trumped up charge to get a point across. Just a warning to all who are saying bad things.

I think the argument that it's a DQable shot ended awhile ago.

That won't happen if you follow site policies and procedures for reporting suspected violations.

Call someone out in the forums and that masses will cry "foul" in part because you (generic "you") are violating site policies yourself.

I don't think Louis called anyone out. There's no reason to request a DQ on an image that's already on the front page, it gets reviewed anyway. He didn't call anyone a cheater, and didn't even start this thread.

Are we allowed to even discuss post processing on ribbon winners, or is that against the ToS?

That's what I referred to "generic you" in my reply -- to refer to everyone who posted their opinion on the photo's legality.

You can discuss any photo and its processing, in terms of whether you like it or not, but you should not be discussing its legality or lack thereof.

Over the years, there have been boatloads of threads started to discuss what is, or is not legal under the rules sets ... that's why the rules have been refined ... in an attempt to make things clear. Healthy discussion with positive results ... were those threads in violation of the ToS?

edit to add: Paul, I mean no disrespect ... I just don't see that anyone has overstepped the boundaries in this thread.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the rule (or is it actually less a rule and more of an unwritten one?) meant for entries that are currently in the process of voting? Once a challenge is over, isn't it pretty much anything goes? What would the point of not discussing legalities on a shot that is already finished voting be? I mean, besides trying to curtail angry mobs, which isn't exactly something you can quantifiably (sic) control anyway.

Sounds to me like you're more just trying to do damage control here (which is commendable), but trying to do it by enforcing a rule that doesn't really exist, or exists for a different purpose.

*ETA* Ok, so Rule 10 - Do not publicly accuse people of violating a rule -- is more generic than not. In my time here, however, I've seen this kind of thing let go all the time, so I think it's pretty understandable that people don't consider it against the rules.

I think Forum Rules 10, 11, 13, and 14 all apply here.

The fact that people speed all the time will not (and should not) immunize you from a citation if/when you are caught in a subsequent violation.

Notice I did not hide any posts or lock the thread -- just asked folks to obey the rules more faithfully from the point I posted my reminder forward. Sorry if you think that's too much to ask ... :-(

Well, to offer my opinion, I think the spirit of that rule is misapplied in situations like this, where the photo is already displayed on the front page. It will be vetted (or not) irrespective of the discussion. The way I see it, a few words were written about a possible texture amidst a lot of high praise that was sure to end in the photo being DQed. If that's against the forum rules, my opinion is that they should be revisited -- or the spirit of them applied appropriately.

Just to offer a counterpoint to the prevailing presumption-of-illegality, I don't think that's a foregone conclusion by any means. Look what won a ribbon in "Impressionism II", and look at the link to the original in the photographer's notes:

Warning Not Safe For Work

I think this whole "argument" is silly, I don't understand why people are debating legality before SC has even had a chance to validate.

Who here remembers the winner from the Negative Space III challenge here 2 years ago? Exactly, in months it will just be a memory.

If that image DQ's or not it won't matter from anything in a year.

On to the next challenge!!! Sad day when I'M the voice of reason. :D

Here's a thought......why not post on topic here, and go open another thread for thrashing the image about the overlay issue.

Did you notice the Extra Rules for that challenge?

"Extra Rules
Post-challenge note: Due to concerns about the nature and description of this challenge, certain challenge rules were intepreted more permissively than usual. Entries that were validated in this challenge should not be relied upon to determine whether a particular effect will be considered legal in future challenges. "

On the topic of the image itself, what do you think about those infantilizing circle lens contacts? Are they going to be the new vogue here - portraits that look like anime cartoons?
07/09/2010 03:39:32 PM · #100
I wonder if it is worth mentioning that this guy is in Asia. Those type of contacts are VERY common here - ESPECIALLY when dressing up for any sort of event.

It's a bit like saying "what about those beads" or "what about that sash"?

Asian girls like to wear cosmetic contacts. It's because of Japan. Japan is popular. We are all going to have to come to terms with that at some point.

And while on the topic of Asia, I wonder if people realize that it's kind of bad form to criticize a guy who might actually struggle with the language for not being super diligent about his comment box checking. Yeah, we all want a little personal validation, but the guy isn't exactly a vet here...

I can manage OK in Chinese myself, but it does take a lot more effort to read stuff than English (or Fr or Sp for that matter). I get 5-10 messages a day with titles in Chinese and I don't even take the time to read the titles for 90% of them (most are spam of some sort). Yeah, most people in HK tend to be pretty capable with English, but that's not the point. The point is that it's a lot more work than it probably looks.

So take a deep breath and relax maybe?

After all, if you comment just so you can get those little check boxes, maybe it's time to check your own motivation?
