I was wondering who around here uses the file storage / syncing service Dropbox? I have recently picked it up to help me with a couple of things, and I think it could be a very helpful tool for photographers.
You can get 2GB of storage for free. If you sign up using a referral link you (and the referrer) get an additional 250MB. Here's mine:

For photographers, I think it's a great way to share large files. Think of large PDF contact sheets you need to send to a client, a PSD you want a friend to edit (it will automatically update on your computer once he/she saves it), a Lightroom library perfectly synchronized among multiple machines, your Photoshop presets automatically installed on all your machines,...

If you have other ideas on how photographers could use Dropbox, please share them, I'd love to hear what uses you guys can come up with!

I use Dropbox to keep my Google Earth place-marks and (encrypted) log-in details shared between multiple computers. With Google Earth you move your myplaces.kml file into the the Dropbox directory and symlink to it on Linux/OSX or modify the registry on Windows to point to the new location.

The cost and lack of bandwidth in South Africa unfortunately makes it very expensive to use Dropbox to back-up/sync anything other than small files.

I also have a referral link :)

I use it (free version) to sync teaching materials and files between my computers. Very, very helpful.

It's possible to get another 250MB free by logging in, going to the 'Getting started' tab and following the steps there.

I was first introduced to it by another photographer that wanted to share some large picture files with me (keep in mind that if files are shared then I'm pretty sure it takes up file size on both accounts). Since then, I have signed up a number of friends and family (earning free space). I now store a lot of my legal documents shared with my husband (password protected) including copies of our tax returns, marriage certificate, etc. I also save word documents, excel files & other pdfs that I want access to where ever I am. I have the free dropbox app on both my iphone & ipad and have accessed files on both on many occasions (you never know when you need to pull up a scanned copy of your receipt from some large purchase). If you have apps such as Documents to Go on your iphone/ipad, you can directly access your dropbox account from those apps.

I also use it when I need to have clients send me backups of their QuickBooks files that are too large to send by email.

Right now I'm writing an article for a publication & I just keep it in my dropbox account so I can bring it up to work on it at any time, from any place.

So.... I'm a big fan of dropbox. :o)

I was wondering how Tammster got clients to send stuff to her Dropbox. I assume her clients had Dropbox too.
For those who need stuff sent to their Dropbox by people who don't have an account, there's a new service:
Airdropper.
Send a private link to a friend, client,... and they can upload stuff to your Dropbox even if they don't have an account. Looks pretty nifty.

drop box is great for syncing files and transferring files.

i personally use Google to back up all my photos, the prices are very cheap. I think i get like 80gb for $20 /yr. I don't have a business so its all personnel photos i've taken over the years that i'd never want to lose.
