I created a website about 3 years ago, when I did a photo shoot for a family. I figured out how to post thumbnails, and when you hovered over the thumbnails, it would show a preview. Since you were hovering over the thumbnail, they couldn't click on the photo to copy or print it.

I shot a neighbor's grandma's birthday party, and they're being kind enough to pay me for it. So I'd like to post pictures to a site for them to preview, but I'd like to lock the pictures down so that they can't download or copy them.

The problem is, I need to do this in the next 2 hours.

Is there a site that does this automatically? It's been too long since I've used Frontpage, so I can't recreate my old one (It seems to have been deleted from my computer :(

Any help would be appreciated!

you could also just watermark them with your name so they aren't able to print them :)

Smugmug.com is what I use. Different levels of payment with the Pro being $150 year if you don't have a discount coupon. You set you own prices for your photos. You can lock them down against copying also.

I'm not sure if there is any "free" service that do what you need. This site...dpchallenge has a photo selling department but the fees are high and not very easy to upload tons of pics at once...IMO of course.

Does your hosting site have SQL access?

smug mug works great for that vawendy. In the gallery settings you can password protect (or not) - set it to be printable or not .. can't right click to save - if ppl are savvy enough you can get around it but I really like it. If you need any help (I see you are pressed for time) I can answer any questions about how to get the settings done quickly. I know other people use photobucket and wix - I am sure you will get lots of help but feel free to pm me if I can help.

LOL - three posts in the time it took me to type the above... you are in good hands vawendy.

That's a thought. Where would you post them, then? I just use shutterfly, but the purpose for that site is to be able to order, so that's a bad idea. Is there a site that has a nice look to it?

Ooops, I was too slow in answering this, so I see there are many posts in between -- off to go read those.

The problem is I don't have $150. I do this about once a year; it's not something that I really want to get into, because I think if I made it a business, I'd start to dislike photography.

It looks like I can try it for free for 14 days, and that the lowest level is $40. That's still more than I'd like to spend, but certainly more doable.

Does the lowest level have the same settings (protection, etc?)

I'm trying the smugmug route -- do you upload full size? Do you upload full sized images and let smugmug resize, or do you resize them first and then upload?
06/28/2010 08:17:38 PM · #11
I use Smugmug and I always upload full size images (you don't have to). Smugmug will resize them and you should be able to set the max size viewable in your Customize Gallery settings.

Thanks!

It seems quite slow; is that normal, or do I have a slow connection tonight?

I'm not having any trouble with slowness with them tonight. I know they have different servers depending on which part of the country you are from, so that's not really a good comparison. It also depends on which uploader you are using. The Java one rocks.

I meant just in the viewing, working with speed. I tried sending an email invite to myself, and it took about 1.5 minutes to do it.

i use smug mug for all of my clients and i LOVE it! i only upload the web sized files though! so if they were sneaky and tried to print them them would be super blurry! (i also disable the printing settings). i have uploaded full sized images up there and got prints through them and they were beautiful! here is my code E3pZ7vn3h6k2g to save $5!
