My guess is that voters will be looking for ghost-trails rather then long exposure. When people think of long exposure, they become very particular, so I'm very sketchy about entering a photo (that is long-exposure), but has no motion trails. Another way of looking at long exposure would be "over-exposed". Here are two long exposure shots.
1. Long exposure motion trails.
2. Long-exposure overexposed.
My question is to the voters, if I enter a shot that is similar to #2, will I get voted down because it is not like #1. These are just two shots I got off Google images, not anything anyone will be submitting. This worries me, voters on this site have become very particular about their shots in that if something is "long-exposure" it has to have "motion-trails" or else it is "bad" or "wrong".
Tell me what you think.

| I think you're spot on. I believe you're going to need motion trails or soft water flow to score high. While I could see an overexposed shot challenging the norm, it will have to be something unique and the overexposure will have to be for a very good reason for voters to vote it high. |

| Right.. I see it as that example 1 can be only created with long exposure. Example 2? Craaaank up that ISO and turn up the lights, blow-out city here we come :) |

The weird thing to me is that "longer than normal" bit:

"Normal" relative to what? In one sense, the motion trail example IS a "normal" exposure for that sort of picture; it's a night shot, the normal exposure would be longish, the motion trails happen because light sources move through the image frame during the exposure. The overexposed shot, on the other hand, is *definitely* "longer than normal", a "normal" exposure would produce a full range of tones...
That said, I expect motion blurs, light trails, and soft water to dominate this challenge. I hope I'm wrong. I'm not entering it anyway, I'm (naturally) in the boat challenge :-)

I did a painted with light shot for the 1 second exposure challenge. It's far from a great shot, but I remember a lot of complaining about regular shots that didn't need a long exposure, and that people thought that it was basically cheating. So I assume people will look for a "reason" as to why you'd use a long exposure on the shot.

I have some long exposure photos that are about half an hour but still there is no motion or trails :)

| I'm staying out of this one as the voters will want "evidence" that the exposure was longer than normal and by that...blur, trails, soft water... that way they won't have to think and can vote on the fly. |
