Colors are good for that. OP says it's very large though, and the cattle dog isn't, particularly...

My guess would be a coyote pup, which would still be somewhat thicker in the head & snout than an adult.

OP says: "Let me just say, if it's a dog, it's a damn big one!"

Leaves out pups. A full-grown coyote isn't even a particularly big dog, at least by my standards.

Ive seen them get fairly large around here, up to about 40 to 50 pounds...

Oh, for sure. We get them that size on the Cape. 50 lbs isn't a big dog, in my world :-) Karma is 60 lbs, and she's still what I'd call medium-sized. For me a "big" dog is like 80 lbs and up, a "really big" dog is like 125+ lbs... Maybe the OP has different criteria?

I am pretty sure that wolf, or whatever-it-was I saw a few years ago, would have weighed in at least a good 80+ lbs. I've seen plenty of coyotes, and that beast was easily 2x the size of your average adult coyote.

It was the size of a big dog. A full grown German Shepherd maybe. It seemed bulkier though. Not fatter.

Of course, I was a bit far away so my scale may be off. It was no small animal.

The grass in the OP photo is too high to see all of the animal, but if it has 6 legs, then it isn't a coyote.

I would agree except that this is only a couple hundred miles from three mile island.

Love the carnivorous pony! Where's it's saddle? ;-)

FWIW..was thinking of what the biggest dog I've ever met was...and apart from a male Great Pyrenees (who weighed a good 140), a SAR guy (Search-and-Rescue) had a big husky/Shepherd/wolf bitch. He didn't use her for SAR as she was too likely to take off, but she was one big girl. I recall her looking especially long in the body, not ridiculously so, but definitely moreso than a husky or Shepherd.

Don't know if these are among the biggest, but the breeds that I've seen that were the most impressive by their size and presence were the Tosa and the Naples Mastiff. These pics are not mine.
