You've got to be kidding right? Apple is not going to continue down the path that there is no problem with the physical antenna are they? Are users really going to buy having their phones just display less bars to begin with to hide the fact that it is in reality losing signal strength when held certain ways. And using AT&T's software to do it! You really feel good about that as their system has been so stellar to begin with?

And for all those out there who say all phones do this so no problem, that is minimizing a real problem with the particular design of this phones antenna system. I was considering waiting for an iPhone on Verizon but may just make the leap to the new Droid X when it releases this month instead.

Sorry folks, we have been totally overreporting how many bars of signal there are. We promise it was a lack of competence rather than us trying to deceive anybody!

Man, you guys just can't wait for negative press about Apple. Nothing to see here. Move on.

I'm just laughing because I personally highly doubt it was incompetence but rather direct propaganda. I'm not laying this all at Apple's feet though, I wouldn't doubt that other companies are doing the same thing. But to see Apple have to pull back the curtain and claim incompetence, well, I enjoy seeing any large corporation have to do that.

Is it any coincidence that AT&T had the slogan "more bars in more places"? Well, ya, if you give everybody two bars for free...

I can see Nigel Tufnel now bragging about his custom built iPhone that gets awesome reception because it was built to show six bars!

Well, I recall about two years ago, when I got my 3g, that Apple put out a software update for the phone to "more accurately" calculate the strength and display it--basically it ADDED a bar's worth of strength. So it is pretty laughable and lame that they claim to be surprised, especially since this "error" by their own admission goes back to the 3g as well. It is pretty dubious that they cranked the bars up with software, now they will crank them down--all they are manipulating is perception, not reception.

For myself, I can duplicate the signal problem if I try, but I can't attribute any dropped calls to that. There is another issue that both my wife and I ARE experiencing: the proximity sensor has moved slightly, and both of us have had it turn on the screen buttons while the phones are up to our ears--then any contact with ear or cheek causes the call to fail (or appear to fail). Hopefully they CAN adjust the hysteresis on the prox sensor function with a software update to fix this problem.

But Apple has been kinda slimy on this new Iphone, from the crappy order process, to the "there is no signal problem, hold the phone differently" to the "there is no signal problem, just --oh gosh, were we ever surprised--an error in the bar display" that I bet they crank out the bar fix and prox sensor fix in the same update, but never admit to the prox sensor thing. Signals will less variable, and the call drops due to the prox sensor will go away--people will think one fixed the other.

Apple is becoming what they beheld: the big corporate villain. They need to fix this fast.

i'll get a smartphone when the price isnt $100 a month per phone or my wife and I can share data. Im not interested in paying $40 a month for home internet, $30 a month for phone internet and $20 for texting.

Just FYI: theres a $15 plan that would let you surf for 200MB/month on mobile network. Plus home/wifi usage doesnt count towards that.

yeah, i just upgraded my phone a few months ago, and they just rolled out these tiered plans.

another beef i have is i wanted to buy and unlocked phone off ebay and just use wifi, but ATT was wouldn't put a data block on my phone, so i'd constantly be billed for data usage even though i didn't want it.

My phone is better than your phone. My dick is bigger than your dick...who cares. Buy what you want and deal with the services. Don't like it, get something else. Simple.
If you do the work and compare and contrast before you buy...you'll know what you are getting into. Be an informed shopper.

Really? I mean do you really think yours is bigger than mine?

I guess it's official, although this isn't anything people didn't already know. Right when I was thinking of coming out of the technology Stone Age. Maybe I'll stick with my LG Shine, although I can't text more than 4 words a minute.

Consumer Reports can't recommend the iPhone 4.

So, Canada is getting the iPhone 4 on July 30.

I've just been reading a live blog on today's press conference at Apple over the reception issue. I like some Apple products and software, my MacBook is the best tool for my various creative jobs, and I love iPad and couldn't live without my iPhone 3G -- [b]before[/i] the update to iOS4. (iOS4 has basically made my 3G a brick I hate to turn on, but never mind.)

What I can't stand about Apple is its self-serving apologetics and constant self-congratulations. I guess every huge corporation does that, and necessarily so, but Apple takes it to the people. It really puts me off. It's in full evidence during the various keynote addresses, where the stupid things elicit noisy rounds of applause from the audience. "Hey, we put a standard mike jack on that iPhone!" (Wild applause.) "Hey, there's an on-off switch on the top!" (Wild applause -- that one's no joke.) "Hey, instead of fixing this hardware-based issue, we're going to give you a free roll of duct tape so you can cover the oopsie-point on the phone! (Wild applause -- half a joke.)
