got the "shipped" notice for mine: they are in transit , having left Shenzen China and now at Lantau Island, Hong Kong (and due here on the 24th) :-)

damn talking heads on NBC had me excited, and now a huge let down. They just claimed on the news that the iOS 4.0 update for those of us with the 3Gs could download it as of today. Not that I can find anywhere! The Apple site still only has the beta seed available for developers.

true, but you are not shackled to AT&T.... probably a better longer term trade off, I think :-)

Anyone get their hands on the new iPhone yet? Any thoughts (pros cons) about it. How's the reception???

Got mine via fedex on Wed: lovin it (huge upgrade over my 3g). Better performance, better screen, better email handling, no reception problems (and the wifi reception at home is better than with the 3g)

Google News is reporting some reception problems if you hold it at the base. Apple has acknowledged the issue.

You're holding it wrong!

I can occasionally see the signal drop one bar if I hold it that way pretty tightly--but my old 3g phone was VERY fussy about how I held it, and I would lose wifi signal completely in some rooms in the house depending on how I held it. But if I hold the iphone4 normally, I don't see the signal change--I kinda hafta squeeze tightly to make good enough contact across the gap. But skin conductivity varies widely from person to person, so it could be worse for others, I suppose. I haven't had any dropped calls, etc. and in general the signal strength is stronger in all locations than with my 3g.

But Jobs' "so don't hold it that way" response was snarky and stupid.

Multi-tasking OS is cool ... maybe.

HD video is kind of neat.

But you all are missing the best part.

With new/better antennas and increased broadcast power, the damn thing might also function as a telephone without dropping calls, failing to connect calls, failing to ring on inbound calls, failing to deliver voicemails on a timely basis. That's what interests me.

I have one on order to replace my iPhone 3G. Hopefully by the 24th, AT&T will get their server problems resolved so i can activate it.

I got it (after standing in the "ticket holders" line from 6:00 AM to 11:20. I am jazzed. I have not had a single dropped call since i got the new phone. Guess I'm holding it right.

Contempt: (noun) The feeling that a person or a thing is beneath consideration, worthless, or deserving scorn.

So why the contempt? And is it for the phone or those who value it?

"Technically" prejudice is a preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience; dislike or hostility formed on such a basis.

So "technically" are you contemptuous of the phone or of those who might value it?

I'd be a mite contemptuous of a phone that drops calls by holding it. NPR had a piece on it and sure enough the phone dropped twice. Ouch. The phone, from what I hear, is awesome; but what a design lapse!

I wouldn't believe much of what you hear on NPR, however the iPhone issues are real. :D

I don't think you can upgrade the 3G to iOS4. You'll simply have to upgrade your phone. :P

You can, but you won't get multi-tasking. But then, that's the most significant part of the new OS, so yeah, new phone coming.

Not quite so David.
I have a a 3G and upgraded it to IOS4 no problem. I also enabled multitasking by editing a file in it's file system. It worked without a hitch, except way too slow so I disabled it again.
I also enabled wallpaper on the home screen. This works 'ok' but slows down the animation somewhat when changing screens.

My wife's 3GS works great with IOS4 though. But I'll get a 4 as soon as it hits the shelves.

Well, yeah, it's always been a memory thing on the 3G, not enough of it for multi tasking and wall paper.

You had to jail brake it for that, too. Right?

Yes I did. I wouldn't normally bother, but since I know I'll buy the new 4 in the near future I didn't care.
And yes, apple decided against wallpaper and multitasking on the 3G due to a combination of prosessor and memory limitations. Otherwise there would obvisouly be performance complaints.

Dear IPhone 4 Users...

07/02/2010 06:18:21 PM · #50
AT&T sucks so bad I could never stand to have an iPhone. Especially since they've been promising that 3G coverage will be here "by the end of the year" since the release of the original iPhone.
