My Norton security has expired and I think I will try something different. I just downloaded the AVG trial softwear which is good for 30 days. I think it costs about 50 bucks for the full version.
I went to the malwearbites site and was going to try it too but to me it looks like they want you to buy it up front without a trial. It is fairly cheep and I don't mind paying but I don't want to buy something I don't need. What do I really need? Since there are so many to choose from would you please give me a link to the correct ones? I did a un-install on the Norton. Windows XP

Thanks, David

I use Trend Micro, it can be installed on 3 different computers for one purchase price. This program was referenced to me by our IT guy for our office at work.

PS. They even have an iPhone app that I use!

Use AVG Free, it works just as well, and it's made by the same company. I knew a friend who bought the real version and he said he noticed nothing different overall other then the thing that says "Thank you for purchasing this copy of AVG Anti-Virus!"

If you don't like AVG, try Avira. It's another free program that works (in my opinion) just as well as any anti-virus software that costs a few hundreds of dollars a month.

Personally, I don't use ani-virus software, and I've had this computer for 8 years now in working condition. Maybe it's personal preference, but I never like anti-virus software because they take up so much processing power, it's not even worth the trade-off to loose my smoothly running computer just so it won't get a virus.

REAL STATISTICS: 75% of everything most anti-virus software find and label as being a "virus" won't harm your computer, and can often times be things that the software doesn't recognize.

Hope that helped in some way.

I've been using the AVG free version for years. Works well. I tried Avira for a little while after some trusted publications rated it very highly, but it nagged me to buy the pay version everytime it did an update.

I used AVG for quite some time and it let me down three times in one week on different machines I take care of. I now use Microsoft security essentials, it is free and works very well.

at my job we use very expensive enterprise edition of symantec endpoint protection. and we still get dozens of spyware infections weekly.

1. the differences between avg free and paid: AVG Free vs. Paid seems like a good free AV to use, I've heard good things.

2. you'll still occasionally get spyware infections. malware bytes, free version, is very capable of cleaning. go to cnet.com, search for malware bytes, then download the free version.

I'm a big fan of Kaspersky. Its light weight yet catches everything. (It actually got things Norton missed when I first installed it). I always found Norton and Trend Micro to be resource hogs.

Thank all of you for your help. It looks like it will be AVG free and malware bytes from cnet.com while I look into kaspersky and the Microsoft.

As an aside David, you might want to talk to a computer wizard since Norton will leave traces in your Registry and could conceivably give you some problems later on. Those in the know could give you some insight as to the proper manner of proceeding... you really don't want to make any mistakes when dealing with the Registry.

Good luck to you... and you will really like AVG.

Thanks Ray. These companies and hackers and virus makers etc. that install this annoying and sometimes devastating trash on our computers should suffer a heavy fine and serve prison time when they are caught. I am very sorry to hear that about Norton. I have used their programs forever. (You would think I might know how to clean the reg. but I don't). Some of the Programs say they clean your PC but I guess they don't. :{
