I was talking with some of my art teacher friends on Art Ed 2.0 about safe use of digital images in digital artwork, drawing inspiration, etc. The issue at hand is students stealing other people's work. The creative commons on flickr is a good solution, but flickr is blocked in many schools because the content in unmonitored.

One solution I have in my own classroom is that we start creating our own stock library... skies, textures, animals, flowers, etc... which does work good. But it got me to thinking that it would be cool to have a high school commons. Students from all over the world could add to the vault of stock photos, specifically to let other people use them. If a students uses another's work in a digital artwork or drawing, they could then upload their finished piece so the original photographer could see how their work was used. It could be a huge collaborative piece.

My question is this. I have no idea how to go about starting a website like this (especially on the cheap). Does anybody have any idea on how I could learn how to set up an image hosting site, or the tools I would need? Thanks!

--EDIT--
OK, I read this too fast the first time …
This sounds like a pretty big undertaking, I'm pretty clueless unless you could just create is as part/category of a web-site that is already made.

Well... thats the thing.

I was thinking it would be able to set it up as a Ning network, but ning just changed their pricing structure, so it would cost for photos and lots of members.... but it may be the direction I go if I can find a sponsor. Otherwise possibly a wiki style site...

I 've seen a Ning site and I think it could be one of your choices. I recently discovered Joomla which is an open source CMS (content management system) development platform, that worked for my needs. I suppose you could give it a try. It took me a month to set the basics and have a working site. Of course I have to work harder to implement the whole task! Good Luck! If you need more information please email me since I don't follow threads regularly lately.

Thanks... I may do that... Summer break is coming up here, so I'll have some free time. Problem with Ning is that for $20/month for Premium service, you still only get 10GB space, which certainly isn't a whole lot if you really want to start building a high res image gallery.
