I have noticed that voting and participation typically has peaks and valleys around the DPL involvement....

Now, I am not part of DPL, but I am wondering.... Is the site driven by the DPL? Voting, participation etc?

It seems that there are many threads regarding people wondering whether or not they should participate because the challenge may or may not be a part of DPL.

This really makes me question my membership value to be honest. I didnt sign up because of DPL and I am now concerned about how the challenges (which IMHO have been fairly questionable as of late) are decided upon as far as voting goes. Now, I am definitely not a top 10 guy or even a top 100 guy, but if anyone says that DPL voting does not skew the results, well IMO, they are kidding themselves.

If this site is only going to be DPL oriented, then perhaps we can have a dpLchallenge.com site for that purpose? Perhaps we should all be put on teams and have the WHOLE site be a DPL. I am okay with that! I would LOVE to have a team to tell me how to process my photos.....

In any event, I do not agree with the DPL challenges being a part of the site challenges. At very least, they (DPL) should only be able to vote on photos in the "League".

Then at least, the regular "public" can enjoy the site without the DPL'ers worrying about their challenges...

Just my .02

Bring on the flaming.

Nope, DPL is a few months long team challenge. I too did not enter, and I don't feel like I'm losing out at all.

I noticed that the number of entries went way up (and the scores seem lower) because of it, but the site definitely isn't driven by DPL.

Honestly I don't remotely understand your critique? <perhaps it is the glass of wine - but I don't think I am that much of a light-weight>.

People are inquiring whether some challenges are part of DPL because in order to benefit your team you need to participate if you signed up. To sign up and not participate is letting down a team of people.

Challenges are what they are - they are the same for everyone and everyone agrees they have been 'challenging' but that really doesn't have anything to do with DPL. Remember what is challenging for one photographer is totally in the wheel-house of another.

The biggest gripe I have seen is that people's perceived averages have been lowered. In essence participation is up (almost double) on most challenges and some big talent has returned so that has driven some to see a lower average than what they were used to, of late.

edited to add: I hope the DPL starts up again right after it ends. Think of it as a weight loss pact - you go to the gym when your group is expecting you because you don't want to let them down. DPL = you shoot topics you wouldn't normally shoot because you don't want to let your team down.

Have to agree with you, glockguy, on the scoring side of things.
Even though I became a member to participate in more DPL challenges I can't wait for it to finish and have some modicum of normality return to the scoring.

Al, there doesn't need to be any kind of team anything for some people to worry about their scores, their averages, whether their art is appreciated, under appreciated, misunderstood, pick your favorite beef in your favorite rant here...

I chalk it up to "artistic" temperament. Less considerate people may call it whining. ;-)

Did you see the thread where the actual average is about the same since DPL started even though participation doubled? I would like to see where the scrubber nixes a participants votes on the opposing teams images to help prevent voting down of good images.

part of my rant is regarding the people that post in the threads saying "Is this part of DPL?" look at the new thread about the "city" theme.

Like seriously, take a f%cking picture!!!!!!!

They are concerned about whether or not it's DPL oriented. This leads to whether or not they are going to vote and then HOW they are going to vote.

Not remotely, they are wondering if they aren't cityscape photographers if they want to go out and shoot. I tend to shoot what is interesting to me - unless I am part of a team that is relying on me to at least try something I may not be good at. They aren't asking about voting - they are wondering - if "City" is not DPL do I want to spend my time shooting it when I don't enjoy that type of photography.

I don't care for DPL because I don't think it's right that entries have been through a committee critique and corrections process. I don't have an issue other than I think it creates an unfair advantage. I think if people want to do that, those challenges should be separated from the regular challenges.

Sure.....

I started the snowball...lets see where it ends!

At the end of the day, it doesn't matter because no matter what is posted in ANY of these threads EVER holds any weight.....

Good luck DPL'ers!

You do realize there are a lot of people on here that are friends that have been critiquing each others' photos prior to submission without the DPL going on? Right?

I totally agree! When did you last have a team to critique and give you feedback on PP???

I never thought of it that way and that is a very valid point. Makes me wanna join DPL again next season.

Brings back my point...

Why doesnt DPL have their OWN challenges?

...and be the only ones to vote on them. Then we'd see some really interesting scoring. ;-)

before DPL, I had some friends that would critique my images before a challenge. After DPL I have a different group of friends that would critique my images.
It's available to everyone, so everyone has a chance to participate -- paying member or not. It is actually an incredible opportunity, and I have learned a great deal more because of it. I wish it would continue after this session is over, because of the incredible learning opportunity.

I respectfully disagree. I found tremendous benefit in shooting with others, and getting advice from friends. I have learned more from friends and teammates on DPL (and DPC Olympics) than I have through tutorials, books, etc.

Committee critique is just another learning process that is available to everyone, whether you are part of DPL or not. Joining a flickr group to get feedback on an entry before submitting is one way you could do this, even if your not in the DPL.

Also... since the DPL started, average votes are up, and entries are up:

Absolutely!!!

DPL, from what I can see, has increased submissions. What is the harm in that?

I'm entering challenges I wouldn't have. I'm doing stupid stuff and getting bombed. But I'm learning. I'm here to learn and meet folks. DPL has provided that in spades.

Get caught up in the scores during DPL and you'll surely get caught up in the scores when it's not DPL. Just shoot. Test yourself. Grow as a photographer. Have fun. Really.
05/25/2010 10:10:50 PM · #23
You can always just post on the fora asking for critiques of your potential submissions with the understanding that the folks who give advice will not vote on that image.

As far as the scores dropping because of the DPL, they have not dropped.During DLP average scores have risen. In the last 13 challenges (DPL challenges) the average score was 5.450185 in March ( pre DLP) the first 13 challenges the average score was 5.345438.

I have been enjoying the DPL, it has brought back a lot of familiar faces from years past, folks who have gotten out of the habit of submitting here, and I for one have enjoyed having a chance to view their work again.

Being on a DLP team you need to submit to every possible challenge even if the subject is something that holds no interest for you, lets say "Peanuts" for instance, or you risk letting the team down. That is the reason people have asked if a submission was in the DLP, because if its not they can decide to skip it if they like.

Before DPL I would ask for C&C and get help on how to make my PP better on several different sites. Now with DPL I run it by my team but still hit up my other sites for suggestions on changes and PP. I am here and on several other sites to learn and get better. Like others have said, DPL has gotten me to photograph stuff I never would have before. It pushes me out of my comfort zone and that is a good thing. Without DPL I would skip the challenges I was not comfortable with.
05/25/2010 10:35:14 PM · #25
Not really. If you look through the forums, you'll find TONS of threads that ask for help in choosing an entry, or help in PP this for the challenge. DPL just formalizes that for a short period of time.
