I figure this is a throw-away challenge. It's going to be so up and down, it just doesn't matter. It was interesting shoot for it, it'll be fun to see what does well, and what works and what doesn't work, but I'm not going to let the score bother me at all! :)

I'll try not to let it bother me. But why are you figuring it'll be a rocky challenge?
What's different?

Well, it's sure looking like I shot crap according to the votes. Just can't see it for myself.

Hmmph. I was expecting this shot to start around 5.4, not this 4.4 bs...

I think it'll be rocky because of extremely differing views on what's interesting in an out of focus shot, does motion blur meet the challenge, what's the difference between missed focus and simply oof, should there be a reason for the out-of-focus. I think there are wildly different views on this challenge, and I'm certainly seeing wildly different votes. But that's the fun of this challenge!

This has been one of the most enjoyable challenges to vote on for me.

It's been great to see such creativity, and out of the box images - the sort of stuff we regularly only see in side challenges.

I hope it's inspired people to think differently about what makes a beautiful image - there are some STUNNING unsharp images in this challenge - GRIN!

I agree. Just finished voting. I gave out a 6.3 average and felt compelled to comment on at least 70 shots...and will likely go back and bump and comment some more later.

thanks for the comment, bassbone!

and yes, there are many stunning entries in this challenge. I'm also happy to report that the majority of them confer with my idea of what "missed focus" should be. (still don't understand the rockiness Wendy).

which contest is this?

*edit* I just reread the thread and realized the title duh! lol

I just finished voting and noticed one collective thing about the voting... am I allowed to make a comment in general about the photos before the voting is over?? is that allowed? (not a specific but the gallery in general)

**edit # 2**
Ok i see that people already all commenting so I realize now that I can (ill get used to the rules sooner or later)
The one thing I am noticing is that half of the group posted out of focused shots and the other half focused missed focused shots. Now the out of focused shots some of them are beautiful and some of them are blurry and hard to look at. The missed focus ones are hit and miss... if the item that is in focus enhances the image it works well but if it doesnt enhance the image it can distract from it. My voting was all over the board. I need to go back and comment but I had to give my eyes a rest. Plus I like to go back thru it incase I misjudged on my first round.

Missed focus shots are actually some of my favorites... i didnt enter this because I just became a member today... but I am excited to be able to at least participate.

Carrie...

The scoring thread for the challenge is the best place to make a general comment about the field of entries.

In other words...right here :)

I am one who has been inspired by this challenge to think differently about what makes an image beautiful for me. Up until now I allowed myself to be way too interested in a perfectly sharp image. Suddenly now I can see how varying the focus can cause the image to tell a story, to capture my attention, to stir my emotions. I think I've graduated to intermediate photographer! Not done voting yet...loving it!

Just a friendly reminder about the challenge description:

"In some cases, having your subject be out of focus is desirable. Take a photo in which your main subject, at least, is out of focus. Other parts of your image may or may not be in focus."

I'm not in this challenge btw. Just hate seeing the misunderstandings :)

Maybe its also important to point out the description for Missed Focus I:
Use an out of focused subject in a compelling way.
Missed Focus I

Who cares if some people took this as a 'Missed Focus' challenge, or an 'Out of Focus Challenge'. If part of the photo (the main subject - in the photographers eyes) is out of focus, blurry, not sharp, whatever, then it meets the challenge.

Why?! This isn't Missed Focus I, this is Missed Focus II and the description was updated and modified. I'd suggest staying with the current challenge when considering the merits of photos in this challenge (granted they're similar for sure, but not exactly the same).

Missed Focus II

Unfortunately, it's not up to me... out of my hands... not out of the question given the overnight climb, but feel that 6 might be beyond this image... especially given the more recent trend.

Bummer. Glad I stayed away from this one...figured it'd be a crazy one to sort out. Not voting either. Just enjoying the sideshow. :-)

Don't forget that there may be some motion blurred shots that are also missed focus.

If you see what appears to be "the main subject" in focus, and either the back ground or foreground, out of focus... Do you assume the out of focus part is what the photographer intended to be in focus, or did they miss the intent of the challenge, or ARRGGHhhhhh I R sooo corn-fuzed
