Hey all,

Just getting my feet wet in the macrostock world with Alamy, but feel very alone there in the forums when I am asking legit questions...like are new contributors promoted? If so, how? How do you get your images in the Alamy Creative section? I am uploading images that have no problem getting accepted, I keyword them as best I can, and...nuthin. No activity whatsoever on ANY of my images thus far. A little discouraging. Am I expecting too much too soon?

So, I feel like I am pissing in the wind. And I'm a woman, so it's quite messy and not very much fun.

Anyone else currently - as in right at this very moment - with Alamy, to help me out a little with learning the site, quirks etc?

Anyone?

I'm registered but don't have any pictures approved, but yeah, I think it's too soon to expect any action. My impression is that it's quite different from microstock, where people with large collections of decent images get downloads every day. With rights-managed images you might only get a sale every month or two, but it will be for a couple hundred dollars instead of one or two, or 35 cents ...

*groan* but I am uploading as many approvable images as I can, every 2nd day or so! Have to keep my day job and find time to shoot, and pp images to perfection and upload, keyword etc...

And how about the 'Creative' part of the Alamy site, anyone have any luck with that?

Hi Snaffles, when you say no activity do you mean you're not getting any views or zooms, or not getting sales? How many images have you got online now?:)

Id say its completely different to microstock, to pass QC only the file quality is reviewed, so looking at noise, artifacts, correct size etc, the actual content of the photo is pretty much irrelevant. Ive had some files on there for coming onto a year now, not many about 20 odd, and had one sale, worth it thought because that one sale made alamy my highest earner for the same year compared to istock and shutterstock where I have tonnes more files. it is hard to get noticed on there, theres like 17 million odd photos there compared to I think 7 million odd on the micro agencies, the stats are odd compared to the micro agencies as well, a view is when someone sees your thumbnail, a zoom is when they physically click the image.

I have I believe 14 loaded up. BTW there are 3 stills from some movie there on 'my' page...because Susan Hayward and Dana Andrews are in it. So parts of those two names mean that I am stuck with them, though I personally had nothing to do with them! I am working on more shots that I got today and from the past that should meet all the sizes.

Don't know if this link will work here, I am link-challenged...but it's also on my profile page...

I uploaded my first images (about 90) to Alamy in February of 2007. My first sale was in June 2007. Then another one in August. As I added more images, the sales increased. Now I sell about 2-3 image per month on average. I didn't start selling microstock until last year. Alamy still earns more revenue for me than all microstock combined.

I noticed that Alamy has a Showcase section, but no way of telling if it's established contribs, a random bunch or what. It just seems a little odd that they wouldn't help promote new contributors, esp after all you have to do to get and stay in!

The Creative section puzzles me too, unless perhaps it's only for royalty-free images. I'm going for Rights-Managed, as I already have pix up on Fotolia that only bring in pennies a sale, and would like to make some worthwhile $$ from my current investment in the D90 and gear.

Anyway, how do you get images in there? Who designates them to be creative and assigns them to that category? I believe I have already posted something similar to this thread in their forum thread, but little response. *sigh*...

Meanwhile I am still shooting and prepping suitable photos...

Hi Susan, you have only a very small number of images on sale at the moment, so it's very early days yet.
The Creative Collection contains images by photographers who shoot primarily for the advertising/design market, the way Alamy has set it up requires that your portfolio (including pseudonyms) only contains imagery of this type. Your images ( and those of the majority of contributors) don't really fall into that category.
As for being showcased - who knows, Alamy are primarily promoting their business not individual photographers, so will make their selections based on their needs, not ours ;)

Hey all, first of all some of us may stand a fighting chance at getting into the CC:

//www.alamy.com/registration/creative_upload_apply.aspx

And an Alamy member did suggest that if you ask Member Services *nicely*, they might showcase your work.

So, here's the plan...under my current Alamy name, Susan Andrews, I plan to keep on with the nature work.

However, now that I have some idea as to what kind of things they are looking for and expecting to see for their CC...well...may as well put my past life as an Advertising whore err, copywriter/account manager to work. I have already started to assemble a bunch of interesting props and bgs so I can create more striking images. And those I will submit to Alamy as - hold your breath - snaffles!

So when I get fed up with shooting wildlife and nature, I can take a break and shoot and upload some pretty eyecandy. Thinking along the lines of stuff like this: Dead simple, the lips are a fridge magnet and the surface if the inside of a small black iron bowl. Also shot the same lips against different bgs, just haven't done pp on them yet.

Feedback and opinions welcome...

BTW - if you want 'your' Alamy page without those extra photos - look in 'My Alamy' and find the 'My Alamy Homepage' link near the bottom, that will give you the code for a page of just you ;)

I signed up but haven't submitted any images yet. I am planning on going out to shoot just for stock one day and use those.

So any suggestions on what to shoot that don't require model releases?

Right now I am submitting lots of natural stuff, mostly cause I shoot lots of nature anyway. Check out the Alamy link on my profile.

Best thing to do is go to Alamy and follow one of their gazillion links to the releases page, it will make everything clear as to when you do and don't need a release.

Thanks Susan. Nice stuff btw.

Thanks! Now I just have to sharpen up my keywording so, ideally, my images stand a better chance of being found and bought. I don't mind the rest of the work involved, but the keywording is a bitch.

I've gone to upload the initial 4 several times but keep backing out. One of these days.
