I'd like to have a decent macro lens for my 40D, but I'm reluctant to spend nearly $600 for something that I have no experience with. (In other words I'm not sure that I have $600 worth of skill at this point.)
So at this point I would settle for a decent lens at a reasonable price, as opposed to a great lens at a premium price. |

Buy a used 100 mm macro; very nice lenses. They are around $400 used.
The inexpensive option is to buy close up lens that screw on like a filter. They are in the $20-30 range. I have a set that my wife used for a while and the results were actually pretty good. |

Second that. Wonderful lens. Much lighter and more compact than the 100mmm, excellent walkaround macro. You can't go wrong with it.

B&H have it for $422.00 with $30.00 instant savings, bringing it to $392.00. An attractive price. Canon 60mm f/2.8 EF-S Macro Lens

I'll keep both the 60 and 100 in mind for the future. I'm not ready to add a true macro lens yet, but I suspect if I had one I would probably shoot more of that sort of thing. I just ordered the Canon 55-250 IS. For $200 I don't think I can go wrong with it. Hoping to have it in time for an airshow next weekend.

You definitely can't go wrong with that. I think its an amazing lens considering how cheap it is. Although, I got it for 150$ ;-) |

You can always get a nicely broken Sigma 24-70 f/3.5-5.6 and rework it a bit...
Bad part- No AF / Bad edge focus / razor thin DOF / no aperture control / ....
Good bit- Really does work, gives ~ 5x mag (size on sensor), looks damn cool.. :) |
