Who the hell is in charge of compiling stats for announcers?!
Who is the guy that has to sit at a computer and determine that John Smith is .256 against left handed pitchers over 6'2" at home when the temperature is above 75 degress, but not above 90 degrees, when the game is played at night, on the day after 3 consecutive day games?
Certain stats make plenty of sense - batting average, slugging average, on base percentage, etc.
But these combined stats are outrageous.
Not to mention pitchers stats...they are just insane to begin with, trying to follow those is mind boggling...
So you pitched 6 innings, and were winning then, but you left with 3 men on base, and 1 out, well the next pitcher comes in pitches 1 out, and leaves the game, well he gets a HOLD, then another pitcher comes in and pitches a grand slam, and he is only charged with 1 run, and a blown save, while you lose the game?

for stats I think they just wire directly into the brain of Peter Gammons like they do in the matrix. If Peter doesn't know it, it never existed.

Who was responsible for putting those three runners on base? That's right, the first pitcher...and he should (and would) be responsible for the loss.

My Rant is the Brewers gave up 19 runs yesterday, Thats a stat I would love to forget.
Baseball is all about stats. That is for sure. It gives the announcers something to talk about while everyone else is standing around scratching themselves and spitting. It is a slow game. Ever listen to Golf Announcers. They have to dig deep for topics also. Be very happy that professional chess is not televised often. :o

| One of the Phils announcers the other day were commenting on how some guy on the opposing team is the 5th player from Iceland. Harry Kalas, being the ball buster he is, demanded that the announcer name the other 4, and then just questioned him as to who the hell they were. |

Have you not been paying attention? He just got off the longest hitting streak of ihs career. His on base percentage is godly. And he has been hot and on the money since the all star break.
.450 batting average with eight homers and 25 runs batted in through his previous 26 games. He was also riding a 14-game hitting streak in which he hit .465 with five homers and 13 RBI.
He has really stepped it up when there has been a lot going against the Phils (Utley, Victorino, Myers and Gordon (still fresh off the DL))
Hell, even the media has had to recognize his upswing recently...it even blew my mind when he was COMCASTS PLAYER OF THE WEEK and had a few GAME MVPs thrown in there. |
