I did a quick search, didn't see anybody had touched on it. Has anyone used these? Saw something about Marvel, Velvia, SuperFlat, etc...

hmmmm... sounds interesting! I've used a custom picture style that I setup myself for the HCB challenge. But it was simply black & white with the contrast and sharpness turned up.
I don't remember a forum discussing it, either... |

Anyone know anything about this? I've never even tried picture styles, but I'm open to trying new things. |

They can be very handy, especially when shooting jpg. Like Wendy, I also used a B&W preset with contrast and sharpness turned up for the HCB challenge.
I shoot raw so the presets get lose if use PS to convert. If the photo doesn't need much tweaking, I use Canon DPP to convert from raw and take straight into PS, and that will carryover your picture style. |

The only time I use picture styles is when shooting for a minimal editing challenge. I used to use the default set that is also built Canon DPP, but as I have learned other ways of tweaking my photos to my preference, I have taken to just using the "standard" style as a starting point.

Well now I know why I struggled so much with my first minimal editing challenge. I just left all my settings as they always are and shot RAW + jpg. Next time I'll know better. |

If I'm trying to shoot b&w, many times I'll change the picture style to monochrome. Simply because I can't really envision b&w very well. The CR2 files are still in color, so I can adjust them however I want, but the camera back shows b&s. |

The monochrome setting does a pretty good job at B&W. Picture styles can also be used for video, and I've had some fun using shooting video in monochrome. |
