It happens all the time. Rarely does a challenge go by without another one erupting. Nothing ever becomes of it. People whine & groan and nothing ever changes.
Here's the challenge.....
Learn from your feedback. Accept what you get. Take the comments for their value to you, and dismiss the reast, AND....
Lead by example!
If you think the votes in a challenge sucked, go forth and vote how you think voting should be done with fervor! You don't like the comments??? Make it your quest to change the style of comments by doing them how you think they should be done. It's been proven time and time again that nothing will change, that the threads make no difference, and truth be told, I certainly don't see any increaser in the number of comments as a result of the people who started the threads taking up their own task.
How are all the "others" supposed to have an example set if those of you who don't like how it's done won't do it yourselves? I'm sure there's been at least a dozen threads about the lack of comments......well, if those dozen people were commenting on every one of the smaller challenges, we'd all have a dozen comments per challenge.
Yet......GASP!.....it's *NOT* happening!!!!
So....that's my challenge to y'all. Don't like how comments are done? SHOW us how it's done.
Don't like the way low votes are affecting the averages? Make it your quest to move your system up the scale to compensate for it. Vote more challenges.

Great idea, get rid of the whiny threads about comments, get rid of the whiny threads about scores.
How about encouraging some useful threads about photography? Hey, here's an idea, people could suggest what they want to see written about, and if some kind soul happens to have the knowledge and is willing to set aside a bit of time they could do just that! I would love to contribute though I don't know how much I have to share.
Anyway, back to the original point, I think you're spot on Jeb, way too much complaining about that stuff these days, we can only but hope people take notice!

I think that's a misconception. I think we all have something constructive to share. IMNSHO, it's not just about the technical aspects of photography. What I'd like to hear from any and all is what it is that motivates and inspires them.
What do you shoot when you have an unexpected afternoon off, and no commitments? What do you do? Do you drive to a favorite spot to shoot? Walk? Do you seek out new places? Do you shoot people? Landscapes? Buildings? Waterfalls?
How do you work once you're home to the computer? Do you jump right on the images and go through them all? Do you go after those two that you *know* are good, and then look through the others later? How often do you go back and look and think, "Maybe I should crop this into portrait instead of landscape.".
I'm thinking maybe a series of "How I do it." threads would be interesting. Just people sharing how they do what they do, and why it makes them want to pick up their camera. Yeah, DPC gives you a quick and dirty excuse for it, but if the site collapsed tomorrow, you wouldn't just give your camera away, so what is it that YOU do that keeps it real?

Come on Jeb, half the fun is in the complaining. Next you will want to eliminate the whining scores threads.
Actually, I think what often happens is that these threads are started by a new member who does not realize this is a dead-horse topic. They have good intentions and believe they have an original and useful idea to offer. |

That does sound interesting. A few paragraphs about any stage of the process could be well worth reading--whether a couple paragraphs about digital workflow, or conceptualization, or studio setup, or the whole start-to-finish. |

Well, if the threads are started by new members then those of us who know it's a dead horse topic should either:
a. not respond and let the thread die
b. post links to all other such threads
c. search out the OP and stone them for starting another thread on a dead horse topic

LOL!!!
d. Offer to help the newbie understand that the voting and commenting process is for their benefit to understand it and use it as a gauge for their efforts and accomplishments.
It's time based, and you really cannot tell anything from the comments and votes from one challenge. You will find as you grow in skill level and experience that the votes and comments you receive will change and for the most part, become better as you do.
It's actually a wonderful system because of the freedom and anonymity involved. It's pretty darn accurate as well. Sure, you'll get a snarky comment once in a while, or three people will drop 1s on an image that gets a 7.2, but obviously they didn't affect it, did they?
I just love the system.......no where else can I get the volume, and quality of feedback the way I do here, each and every week.
When I toss out my next image for a challenge entry......bring it on, let me know what you think, vote honestly and subjectively, tell me by the number and quality of the votes and comments if *I* did *MY* job as a photographer!

Sometimes it catalyses action - the longer look comment series I do on the monthly Free Studies were done in response to a thread about a lack of comments on a particular style of photo.
However, I do agree with the general thrust of your message. |

But, people LOVE to complain! It's not just newbies. It's entertainment, somewhere to blow off steam a little, maybe stir some return comment. We "might" learn a little something useful, but the challenge threads are a fun place to go, someplace to join in the general cacophony. Long live the WHINER!

I have a variation on this idea: just as we have automatically generated "outtake" threads after every challenge, let's have an automatically generated ______ Challenge Vote/Score Whine/Bitch/Moan Discussion Thread created after each challenge, but with a twist: these are all created within a specific and separate forum (similar to Rant" so that those of us who don't want to even see it can block in our account preferences, while those who thrive on those threads will not have to keep creating them. I think this meets everyone's needs--plus, after a while in those threads, some members will tire of them, and can then block them too.
Sounds like a win win to me.

While I agree with Jeb's position on posting about low votes and bad or no comments, there are tons of threads created that aggravate, annoy, irritate and cause me to want to grab my torch & pitchfork and I find threads whining about other whining threads both ironic and most annoying, but we already have the IGNORE feature for all users, any thread. I have learned to simply use that ignore feature and live in blissful ignorance. ...which is where I am heading with this thread as well. Enjoy. :-) |

Perhaps like the Rant forum, we need a Whine forum, togglable so it can be hidden if you don't want to see it. After all sometimes you need a place to winge, beat dead horses, kvetch and just let loose your self pity. But that doesn't mean its pretty to watch. |

Maybe it should be added to the Welcome Centre stuff, please do not moan and whine about one bad comment...and if at least half the commenters are making the same comment/critique about your photo, well, chances are that they're right! That was the only way for me to realize that I had to change how I did things, if I wanted to get anywhere.
Is your photo oof? Learn how to focus...and consider getting a tripod. Is it blurry? Shoot faster or use a tripod. Is it too dark? Learn how to expose for the conditions. etc...
Hey howzabout a whine thread for all the stuff you have learned?! Thanks to a certain C-T R, I now carry a tripod everywhere, switch off the VR when it's mounted up on tripod, use mirror lockup and a remote release, use long exposures, use handheld flashes and even the little micro lens is putting in its share of the work...and don't even get me started on custom white balances and in-camera contrast settings and stuff like that...Aw man...;-0 |
