I thought it would be fun to post our first challenge entries and see how much we have learned and technology has changed. My first entry was so bad it's laughable. Digital camera's started to become available to consumers in the late 1990's. My first digital in 2002 had 2.5 M.P. resolution and cost about $1500. I'm a little embarrassed but here it is!!!

Entered: 8/17/2002
Score: 5.33
Placed: 94/185

It's interesting to read the comments!!

My first entry was in the 2009 Hidden gem 1,000th challenge.

From my photographer's comments: Entering the 1000th challenge was a great introduction to the site. Thanks for the comments. This image was taken in 2001 with my first digital camera and I had less than 1.5 M pixels to work with after cropping

I had met Bear_music the month before and he had told me about the site. In fact, he signed me up as a member on our first date! When the archival challenge came up he was insistent that I must have a photograph to enter. ... And here we are 16 years later.

That’s actually a pretty good first entry Penny.

We should have another hidden gem challenge.

This was mine it was so bad, I didn’t even know what a sharp photo was back then.

Shadows. Amazing how many positive comments I got, yet I barely scored over 5.

here is mine from Sep 2002

Not a good picture but considering the shutter delay on my Sony DSC-F707 it was amazing that I got the splash at all.
And that camera still works and I use it sometimes for infrared photography or risky circumstances, like duct-taped to a bike.

I did that long time ago also with my car as shown in the setup here: how did they do that ?

April 2002 (entry #921) -- the site had only been up for a couple of months and I had only found out about it the day before the submission deadline. Taken with my Olympus 490Z P&S for the challenge "Stopped Motion" (taken from the freeway; title refers to the airplane contrails, the start of my tendency to look for "alternative interpretations" of the challenge topic ...)).

Silence was the challenge.

the title is "Peace at Last" -- meaning the kid is sleeping, so the cat finally gets a little bit of peace and quiet. I was embarrassed that the cat was so chunky, that I cropped part of her out. :)

Thanks for posting your "Originals". I find it so interesting to see how each of us have developed over the years and yet for the most part the things in an image that we find interesting remain as a seed in our growth and development in photography. It's almost as if we were children discovering our passions and growing into adults with the same yet matured concept of the world perceptually, in composition and technicality!

I was CLUELESS and the entry is embarrassing. I was a momtographer, shooting my kids sports and had never ever entered any type of challenge.I joined DP to learn and grow. I believe I have done that.
I will say back then 2 of the comments were very helpful, the others were just "sassy"

I took HOURS to shoot this. Ha!

I was so nervous to enter.

Now, I LOL at the comments. "Not enough saturation". "Colors look natural". "Great lighting". "Lighting could be better"...

BUT... people commented back then!

I'm thankful. That's how I learned.

my first entry came 68 out of 440 .. which i was pretty excited about ..
especially as i was new to the site and constantly blown away by other ppl's photos ..
and i felt hesitant to comment on them because i felt like such a newby .. and who was i to comment ..
i got over the hesitancy as you can see . !! . lol .. ;)

Nov 23, 2008. Photo and title do fit the challenge, but not much else to say or show here.

Actually, this is embarrassing mostly because I'm not sure I've improved that much if at all . . .
